I have not heard this 7 inch but this is my two cents: Surgeon - balance as the title implies this album balances techno with the abstract. To me this is his best album. Surgeon has said in interviews that he was influenced by experimental artists (such as coil) and from this album it becomes aparent. Surgeon - basic tonal vocabularly. More slamming than balance (in fact it precedes balance). Hard mills' like beats with an odd sense of melodies. One of the tracks reminds me of the south seas. It is actually a very good album if you like techno. And I do. There is also a previous album that I do not have. Also there is a host of 12 inch singles but I do not have access to them at work. So someone else will have to comment. -daniel Head Monkey Mad Monkey Records On Fri, 26 Feb 1999, J m A i V k O e R wrote:

I would agree this is probably his best album. Part of my reasoning is that there is alot of variety. In the past Surgeon was usually compared with Mills because of his hard banging minimalism. Balance has some of that, but it also has some really beautiful tracks like Golden. It's a very good release. Recommended Also try and give a listen to his track on a comp called The Process (Caipirinia..probably misspelled).

It's been a while since I have played it so I can't really comment on tracks. It's very much in the same minimalist direction has his early work. Very good. My favorite singles by him are Muggerscumout (Soma), Pet 2000 (Downwards), and Magneze (Downwards). Most of his early stuff is pretty good. Some of the 12"s he released after Basic Tonal Vocabulary were getting kind of strange. I remember not really liking the singles Patience and Learning. They weren't bad, just not what I was looking for. I definitely think he is one to watch out for in the future, he seems to be branching out and experimenting more with different style. That's kind of what hoped that Cari Lekebusch and Adam Beyer would do. I thought they were really good for a while but they seem to be in a monotone rut. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Indeed. One of the most striking remixes I heard last year was his remix of Mogwai's "Mogwai Fear Satan", which was this weird beatless thing. Instead of a pounding 909, it featured textures that were aggressive in an entirely different way. -d.w.
