I used to think that Trip Hop was defined by the "U.S. Homegrown - Total Trip Hop" series on Moonshine. You know bands like "The Crystal Method" amd "Fluke" but I was later corrected and told that Moonshine was wrong, and that this was called "Big Beats" (Which over the past 3 years he was proven correcrt. Big Beats has become a definite category of electronica) - and a damn good one at that! So when I was corrected, I was told that the definitive "Trip Hop" CD was ISDN by the Future Sound of London. So I bought it. Sounds like fragmented ambience to me, but what do I know. Here in NYC, it seems that "Trip Hop" is the catch phrase used by casual clubgoers that don't really listen to underground music and use it to sound hip. So what is it anyway, and do we care here at the idm list? ------------------------Izzo cares......

Here in OC, it seems that "Intelligent Dance Music" is the catch phrase used by casual clubgoers that don't really listen to underground music and use it to sound hip. chri(dm)s.

trip hop is, and always has been, the music of tricky, massive attack, and portishead. maybe hooverphonic, morcheeba. usually vox over smooth synth textures and scratches, with a jazzy feel and pop-oriented approach. hard to decribe. it's a bristol thing, i think. i've heard of porno for pyros described as trip hop. except for the trip part, that's a lie. nils
