the impoverished level of discourse around here has me about ready to weep. rather than pull out my flamethrower, however, and indulge my eviller tendencies, i'm putting my queer shoulder to the wheel to make idm a brighter, more scintillating place. a special president's day toast (sorry, all non-US readers, for this breach of global etiquette)--here's to a digest without any asinine comments about grrlz & boyz & mp3 to be you and me... noteworthy releases: have i mentioned the TPLAY 12" on SND yet? quite stellar debut 5-tracker out of sheffield. a bit of pole, a bit of CR. monochord musings against a clickety tech-house backdrop. limited to 400 and apparently gone, but keep your eyes out for the next 12", coming down the pipe soon. kultbox: anyone into evil, tech-steppin' jungle should check out this chicago label, responsible for Casey Rice's Resigned 12" a few months back. the production is still stuck in the bedroom, which bums me out a bit, but the mood is nasty and dark, comparable to the ghetto safari releases (snuggles, 3D, etc.). the new Rude 66 12" (Kultbox 04) features some twisted fuckers out of the netherlands, blending hardcore and jungle to severe effect. derek bailey, "plays back" (bingo): much better than the tzadik derek bailey vs. drum'n'bass CD, this release pitts free-improv guitarist extraordinaire against sound manipulators like D., henry kaiser, casey rice, john herndon, tied + tickled trio, jim o'rourke, etc. non-repetitive beats galore offset bailey's mad axe-bending. a teakettle in dialogue with a trainwreck. 10 extra points for sounding nothing like anything ever released on skam, MaS, markant, etc. parmentier, "luxsound" (sigma editions): anyone in search of dark, droney ambient should pick up this release from the ex-Thela folks. it's exactly what you wished they'd come up with. that's it for today's thumbnails. i'm *still* in a bad mood, so i think i'll go put on some eyehategod. fuck "insite," long live powerviolence. refreshed, phil

From a nonexpert nonfan: Glass is a pomo wet dream avant-minimalist classical composer of the 60's and on, big Steven Reich and idm influence, big fan and virtuoso of the bleepbloop music. Did a flick about the machinization of society with a daunting tribal name meaning "society out of balance". Extent o' me own knowledge-- have no clue about current idm connections. M. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up.

taking a shot at the spelling, it's "Koyaniisqatsi". I'm sure I missed a letter or two in there, but I'm close. Truly stunning--I haven't seen it for nearly a decade, I believe, but it left quite an impression on me as a pre-teen (or however old I was.) Hard to find, but track it down, if only for the music...it's currently on my "must see again" list. rob!
