umm.. in the new urb kool keith protoge, sir menelik says that he did (a) track(s) with (amongst others) Expansion Union. Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't this the new wax trax financed alter ego for our own list member James Bernard?!?! this could be soooo dope. btw, is the scarmanga LP any good? i gave the 12" tracks a listen (via RA), and i thought they were kinda blah, but the Cyclops4000 flexi that comes with the afforementioned iss of urb is nice. Speaking of which, i was very impressed with this issue of a zine i'm usually lucky to dig 1/4th of.. big feature on IDM big names (Ae, TJ, LV), a short bit on BOC's film work, plus great hip hop articles on the coup, outkast, styles of beyond, full page (p)review of the new roots album. and a double ABB dose of a Defari article and a dialated peeps multipage photo layout and all the menelik stuff. recomended. although i doubt it'll touch the new sean cooper idm-zine or the next exp. also: is the matmos on here exclusive or otherwise? what's tha dilly? [from mdos mailout] souRce research & maprefltd (UK) | sr 98.1cd | souRce research recordings | project 98/1 | CD | ATS 210.00   --> matmos, leiff elggren & souRce research oh and where can i obtain the split 7" with piano magic?? i know one of the guys from the group posted a url here a while back, does anyone have it? i can't seem to find np: nas- 'it ain't hard to tell' loVE

urb is getting better and better. it's a good mag, even though it's not fully idm, i love the idea of covering all bases from hip hop to house to experimental techno, without balkanizing them into multiple magazines. and yes, i was going to mention that the sir menelik 7" is quite good. i really dig the squiggly little synth sound in it. good thing i waited that extra week before getting rid of my turntable! i've heard from a friend that the scaramanga lp is pretty dope, but a little on the bitter side-- i think the urb blurb explains why. on the hip hop tip===anybody heard anything on the j-live album? that kid is a bright light at the end of the dark rap tunnel. um...idm content...ummmm....just heard the funki porcini track off 'fungkungfusion' on the radio. i think i'm gonna go put that track on loop on the player. any word on new porcini? AND, i think rykodisc finally has the right idea about mp3-- i like mp3 as a good format for previewing music (i've been dissatisfied with realaudio) and if something is good, i'll buy it in cd format, mp3 or no. well, except that fatboy slim track that i can't bring myself to actually pay money for. :)

Yup, new album is out at the end of March. I've had a promo for a couple of weeks, and it's fucking great. Not quite as manic as has last couple of releases, but still has that sleazy FP sound. If all goes as planned, Mr. Porcini will be coming in to my radio show week after next (Tues. Feb 16th, 10 PM Eastern) to talk about the album or whatever. And we'll play some tracks from the record. Those local to Toronto, it's at 89.5 FM. Everyone else, RealAudio at www.ciut.utoronto.ca Greg
