This was on UK-Dance in response to a query about the revised schedule for the Big Chill festival. ---- From: Peter Lawrence <pete@blissful.demon.co.uk> Subject: Big Chill Update Yes, the date is August 30,31, September 1. After the traumas of Diss, we've been invited to another part of Norfolk, not far west of Norwich. At a council meeting this week, we received a unanimous 11-0 vote in favour of the community hosting this year's Gala. The police and South Norfolk Council both like the site and have said that they won't object so it's all systems go. Latest line-up additions are Afro-Celt Sound System, Bedouin Ascent, Grantby, Jon Chill Out, Mr Scruff and BJ Cole, plus a Brazilian DJ session from Far Out Recordings. Still more to be added. The day-by-day run down looks like this: Friday : Zion Train, Squarepusher, Andrea Parker, Sounds From The Ground, Paul Thomas, The Otherside featuring Musa K, Yam Yam, Rumpus Room DJs, Mr Scruff, One Tree Island (Manchester), Ben Guiver. Oscillate club session with Higher Intelligence Agency, Subtropic, Freeform. Saturday : Global Communication, Springheel Jack, Azukx, Talvin Singh, Nelson Dilation, Being, Rockitt, Wishmountain, Twisted Science, Simon Scott/Sunday Service (Leeds), Muslimgauze, The Lost Music Of Celtarabia, Gabi (Kiss FM), The Cosmonaut, Far Out Recordings, Another Fine Day, BJ Cole, Bedouin Ascent. Ninja Tune Club Session with Coldcut, DJ Vadim, The Herbaliser, etc Sunday : LTJ Bukem, Autechre, Mixmaster Morris, Fila Brazilia, The Solid Doctor, Kid Loops, Earthtribe, Afro Celt Sound System, Joi, Skylab, Land Of My Mothers Sound System, zoviet:france, Grantby, Jon Chill Out (Classical mix), Martyn Bennett, Spykid, Ben Willmott, Eva-Lution, Diversity Of Life. Hypnotique e-z listening club session with Harry Lime and Perry De Chico, The Gentle People, Karminsky Experience, The Good Doctor, Johhny Mendosa. also : Arc fire and ice sculpting, Mamaloucos circus, Hexstatic visuals, Sorted Visuals, market area, international cuisine, flushing loos!!!! weekend tickets still left though they're going fast. Please e-mail globalheadz@southern.com for more details. globalheadz@southern.com ******** global headz / the big chill / on magazine ON magazine July >> Funki Porcini, Springheel Jack, 7/8 of a second, unitone hi-fi, water power, technobabble, reviews, lots more. ------ Well it certainly looks like a pretty storming line up from an idm point of view, and there's lots of other stuff going on as well. Check http://www.southern.com/globalheadz/ for more info. I for one will be there - though winning a ticket via Muzik magazine has got something to do with it! :) J ^ __________ ________.__/_____ _||_/ James Skilton aka Steady J _[]/_____________[.__\____-_ DJ and Party Animal | | Part Time Hedonist |____________________________| Full Time Technohead |__|-' '-|__| Steady-J@Firefox.co.uk Autechre and SKAM discogs: http://subnet.virtual-pc.com/~sk393820/

OK, Team IDM. Here is my thoughts on the event. It was good. Really good. All thoughts of the Summer festi nightmare were magically wiped away. Here the music was just as loud as it should be with no beady eyed coppers watching your every move. Anyway - to the music. We arrived about 10 o'clock, just before Another Fine Day kicked in. It was nice. Swishy sploshy dripdy buzzy damp rainforest squelch sun music. (with drum and bass - well everyone does these days, don't they?) Good blacksuited dancers with flourescent wierdshit on stage too. After that (if my memory serves) there was a woman playing violin and singing into and echo peddle while a guy without a safety net did ridiculously dangerous looking things on a rope. Then the gentle people came on and did their gentle thing. Miming to their songs, and doing their dance routines. It was all very pleasent, but only really got exciting when the pink monster from the album cover turned up and grooved along to. (He's really 6ft tall you know) just after midnight saw the arrival of Global Communication in the form on the long heard beardy one without glasses (I can never remember which is which) playing a fantastic set of the best house ever. I didn't recognise any songs (except the way) but it sounded like it could be there own stuff (guess) anyway it was top. Then was Talvin singh, and we popped upstairs for a drink and a spliff. Upstairs was dub DJ's, and easy listening etc. Very nice, especially when Matt Black was on the decks slaying the crowd with old James brown records. Downstairs again then, for the end of Talvin's tabla jungle collision, and for Squarepusher. I wasn't that impressed, though me mate loved it. I thought it was a bit too much bass noodling, and not enough action. Problem child was great though, and a couple of the ones I didn't recognise kicked off as well, but overall... a little disapointing. Then it was Bukem, who did what he does best with no surprises. ie. seemless dolphin style mixes with MC Conrad (?) showing how to fit in with the music, and not shout all over the top of it. Very enjoyable. After that it was JOI soundsystem, who I don't think have written a new song in 8 years. Lazy buggers. Overall: Hooray! the big chill are back. The Academy was packed, so they must have made some good money to go towards those pesky debts. Lets send out happy thoughts to Pete Lawrence and the crew, and long may they continue! Andrew C.

And not 200 yards away, The Fridge was jam-packed too, but with sweaty trance people at Return to the Source, which I reckon was also a top night, but, er, not very IDM so, er i'll shutup. -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions
