ok. finally found a copy of "mr brubaker's strawberry alarm clock"...wow, it's a doozy. what's with ninja tune artists consistently putting out 70+ minutes of material? how do they do it? anyway it's nifty nifty stuff...the vocals on one track bother me, but with so much here that's not a biggie. and you'll never be the same after letting "apple sauce" sink its freaky tentacles into your brain. i read somewhere that there's some connection between neotropic and FSOL, which kind of makes sense...the same ability to drift from ambient to hard beats and back, even within one track, is there. however, "mr brubaker's" totally blows away "dead cities" (the closest FSOL analogue i can think of) in my opinion. man, between this and tobin, '98 was just a phat year for the ninjas. -rob (oh, and it's really nothing like autechre. but that's ok.)

i really enjoy it, but it is extremely long...almost to a fault. all the tracks cover sooo much ground and are so dense, that it really takes a while to get your head around even one of the tracks, much less 74 minutes worth of tracks. riz really is an amazing producer, and i can't think of one track on that disc that i dislike. so although it took quite a few listens, it's definetely one of my favorite ninja releases in the past year or so. has she done any particularly noteworthy remixes? i'd love to hear riz mash up some other artists. ............ . . . . . . . . . Yep. Apple Sauce ruuuulez :-)

Well, the connection isn't that strong. She was haning around at the FSOL's studio when they did Accelerator and helped them with some samples. And/Or she sung on Papua New Guinea (I don't knoe this exactli 'caause I wasn't able to track down a copy of either of this releases). FSOL did also use a sample of Riz' old band Shrine on Dead Cities. And remixes for: DJ Food ('Inosan' on Refried Food), Mantronix ('Bassmachine Re-Tuned', maybe promo only (haven't found this yet)), Low (2x'Anon' + 'Do You Know How To Waltz', all on 'Owl Remix Low'). She did some really cool remixes on low's owl remix album. For those not familiar with low, they are a mormon drone rock band that all emo rock should become instead of that whiney punk shit. Also contributing remixes are mike kandell and DJ vadim. It's definently worth picking up, as is there original material. And for those who already like low, I picked up a clear 7" called "Hospital People" that is the singer and bass player doing electronic stuff. -Daniel daniel@peachfuzz.net ============================================================================== Peach Space Disco For Fish Tacos PO Box 1902 8-10pm Wednesdays, KUCI 88.9fm Huntington Beach, CA 92647 www.peachfuzz.net/space www.peachfuzz.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sterile: Orange County's Intelligent Electronic Monthly www.peachfuzz.net/sterile ============================================================================== "A lot of people just talk out of their ass, I happen to fall under that category" -Dana Watanabe

I agreee that the low remix album is worth picking up. The Porter Ricks mix is where it's at for me (and is the reason I bought it). It's 12 minutes of fuzzy loops of indie rock put through the Porter Ricks filter system. I love it. It's musical Codeine. The Vadim mix is just alright, in my opinion. I like his drums, but they sound almost identical to the drums he uses all over on USSR.... Plus, and not to start this flame war again, the vocals are really fucking out of tune with the backing track. Heh, our own lexaunculpt had heard and really liked the remix of "Over The Ocean" and nearly shit his pants when I played him the original. It's no where near idm or anything electronic, and is thus the perfect antidote when you've been listening to too much of it. Low is minimal mormon drone rock. It's a 3 peice act, with a singer/guitarist, a bass player, and a female singer/drummer (although she only brings a cymbal, a snare and a kick drum, and mainly uses a brush). It's very slow and moody, and very well done. They have 3 albums and and two EP's on Vernon Yayd/Caroline, and an album on kranky. I prefer thier more structured stuff on vernon yard/caroline, thier kranky release is more in the vein of flying saucer attack. My favorite release is thier first one, "I could Live in hope", produced by Kramer. Runner up to that would be thier third full album, "The Curtain Hits The Cast." I love all of thier material, and would strongly suggest seeing them perform live. They also have a mail order live album that's impossible to find but well worth the effort. -Daniel daniel@peachfuzz.net ============================================================================== Peach Space Disco For Fish Tacos PO Box 1902 8-10pm Wednesdays, KUCI 88.9fm Huntington Beach, CA 92647 www.peachfuzz.net/space www.peachfuzz.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sterile: Orange County's Intelligent Electronic Monthly www.peachfuzz.net/sterile ============================================================================== "A lot of people just talk out of their ass, I happen to fall under that category" -Dana Watanabe

Yep... Although actually I HATE the Vadim mix anyway; it's as insanely boring as all his other stuff. I like the remix album because of the remixers involved; his own remixes (add to this the Gus Gus remix) and his own stuff cause in me an irresistible urge to change the track. The drum sound is part of it - some sort of very straight very very very very repetitive drum machine sound; no pliability to it, no life to it, just going on and on. Ah well, I won't say any more. Just can't stand it, full stop. On the other hand, there are some excellent mixes on the Low remix album - I agree the Porter Ricks one is amazing, especially with speakers that can produce those sub-bass sounds. The Neotropic mixes are all great, although they get a little repetitive sometimes (in eg the beat department)... Can't remember what else is on it. Speaking of Neotropic remixes, the Arcon 2 remix OF Neotropic on the 15 Levels of Perception EP is fantastic...
