I usually don't wade into such frays on this list as they inevitably lead to even longer threads and countless flames, but...

To answer your question - no, he can't even mix two records. I used to go down to the Bar Rhumba and check out his weekly, "That's How it Is" or something like that. And he's atrocious, can't match a beat to save his life, would let entire records grind into the run-out groove before sorting out another one on the other deck. But all in all every tune he dropped was fucking ace, I'd dance half the night and trainspot the other half. But what's more important, mixing skills or track selection? I'll take a shite DJ playing good tunes over a good DJ playing shite music any day. And I'd say it takes talent to have a good ear; he's right up there with Mixmaster Morris, Giles Peterson, and others whose opinion you can trust without question. Admittedly the Psychonauts mixing under his name was pretty lame. So maybe DJ'ing isn't his forte, but he runs a tight label. For that I'll give him props. ____________________________________ Brock Phillips - bphil@email.unc.edu WXYC 89.3 FM The New Science Experience Tune in every Sunday night 10-12 AM EST http://www.wxyc.org for live RA broadcast Promos, demos, etc. welcome for submission Email for postal address and details... Speaking of which, I'm DJing at raves in Dallas on February 12th and March 27th. Fluoroscopic Kid will also be performing live, so it's sure to be a treat.

I've always kind of wanted to be James Lavelle precisely because he doesn't do that much and yet he's having a grand old time.

_ran_ a tight label. page 10, Feb issue of Muzik reports: "Rumours have arisen in the industry that several mo' wax artists are planning not to record for their record label again following mo' wax founder James Lavelle's move to XL. Lavelle made the move to the independent XL following mo' wax's transfer to Island following parent label A&M's closure last year. under the deal, any future Lavelle label would have to take a new name." and there you are. daevid j --------------------------------------------------- Get free personalized email at http://www.iname.com
