i just got a promo of the forthcoming steve reich remix compilation on nonesuch, and it's amazing. standout track is by andrea parker (no surprise). coldcut, ken ishii, dj spooky (?) all figure here... i was a little skeptical of some of the remixers--was afraid it might be a bit run-of-the-mill (all the usual names represented)--but no, it's fucking great. (look for a more eloquent review soon @ urban sounds.) one question. several of the tracks contain a vocal sample that also feature's in UNKLE's "bruise blood mix" of tortoise's "djed": "...let some of the bruise blood come out to show them..." what the hell is this from? i'd always thought, poor ignorant me, that it was just some snippet that unkle had spliced into the tortoise track. but given that it features on 2 or 3 of the mixes here, methinks it must come from a steve reich composition. help? phil ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

The sample comes from one of Reich's earliest compositions, "Come Out". The piece consists of two identical tape loops of a preacher(?) speaking which start out in phase with one another but then they gradually drift out of phase causing all sorts of cool as shit sounds/word interactions to occur. I believe he was one of the first composers to do this... back in the mid to late 60s. (correct me if I'm wrong.) Orbital did their own take on this w/the opening track on the Brown album. You know where Worf (It is Worf from Star Trek: TNG, right?) say, "Where time becomes a loop..." Howie

it's from one of his tape loop pieces from the 60's called "come out." you can get it on one of the odyssey records comps that has pauline oliveros (typical dlb monochrome) and richard maxfield on it as well. odyssey is a great old classical/experimental label that put out multi-artist records starring all the people that get name-dropped in interviews. eric

The Tortoise/Reich connection is something I was thinking about a few days ago, since many of Tortoise's mad-vibes-jams have a very similar sound to Reich's pieces. Plus, there's the Orb/Reich connection, with Orb sampling "Electric Counterpoint" for one of their tracks (something from "Ultraworld" I think?). .John.

yup. no, this ain't no preacher. that's definitely 'it's gonna rain.' no -- 'come out' is something else entirely. this audio snippet is taken from an interview with a young man who is describing how he was severely beaten and then taken into custody by the police for participating in a non-violent civil rights demonstration. this particular phrase was culled from the section of the interview in which the young man is describing how the police were deciding which of the people they had rounded up could go to the hospital and which would stay in custody. in the phrase, this man is describing the fact that he "had to, like, open the bruise up and let some of the bruise blood come out to show them", them being the cops, that he was injured -- because that was the criterion deciding who would be hospitalized and who would remain jailed: are you bleeding or not? surprised at how many reich fans remain in the dark about this truly remarkable political content, sr -- sd

of course, it's also used in a song by maximillian colby. has anyone on this list heard of max colby? probably not. oh well. - wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu "If you make me look bad, I swear to God, I'll never talk to you again."

OK, so it was from a much earlier post, but just to totally clear up the "Come Out" thing, the sample ("I had to, like, open the bruise up and let the bruise blood come out and show them") is from the earliest Steve Reich tape loop composition, "Come Out". It's of a young black man who was beaten and is explaining what he had to do to prove it, or something. The preacher sample is from "It's Gonna Rain", a slightly later tape loop composition, of the rantings of a street preacher. I have always been very impressed by UNKLE's inclusion of that sample in the Tortoise remix, because for all that Tortoise play down the minimalist aspect, it's clearly an influence on their work, and particularly Steve Reich's music is. Can't wait to hear the remix album! Can anyone post a tracklisting? <-PS, if one's already been posted, DON'T bother reposting, as I'm slowly getting through all the old stuff. It's Gonna Rain is from January 1965. Come Out is from 1966. C. -- Chris.Hilker (cspot@hyperreal.org)
