just wanted to add a bit about the portable turntables that were brought
up a few days ago. i've got one, and is indeed ace. it's a columbia
GP-3 (no relation to the apple G3). my understanding is that these were
made in the US in the 60s, went out of production, and then recently
someone fired up the factory & started making them again in Japan. but
i could be way off there.
the sucker is lightweight, with a handle on the top end, so you could
actually carry it around. there's a clamp that holds the record on
pretty snugly. i've swung it around, just for experimentation's sake,
and you get a cool sort of doppler-warble. there are screw holes on the
back so you can hang it on your wall if you like. plays at 33 and 45,
and has pitch control (!). the ONLY drawback is that it's mono. anyone
know if that can be fixed?
finally: you don't have to order from japan. i got mine from APC, the
trendy upscale clothing store in NYC. they have a web site at
www.apc.fr. the turntable isn't listed in the online catalog (i think
it goes in and out of stock), but you can just call up and ask. cost me
$150 + domestic shipping.

p.s. if you've seen the gap billboards with a baby on a turntable, that
says "first scratch"--that's the same columbia GP-3.
