i guess the obvious recommendations are 4hero and roni size. for more abstracted takes on how jazz & drum and bass, check out photek's "hidden camera" ep, which features "KJZ", probably the most technically sophisticated drum and bass song ever (IMHO). as far as straight-up jazzy but non-easy-listening d'n'b goes, I would check out endemic void's "equations" album, an overlooked record if 'ere was one. sort of like haringay-era squarepusher without the noodles and with much better breaks. courtney pine has an album of drum and bass remixes of his stuff that's quite excellent as well. it has 4hero's classic remix of "i've known rivers" and a great take on "don't explain" by flytronix, along with 5-6 other great tracks. i would avoid comps with titles like "jazzy jungle" and "jungle jazz juice" or whatever. i don't know where they dig up the shit that goes on most jungle compilations. Am I the only one that thinks that 4hero are about the most-overhyped tossback "I can't admit that Stevie Wonder signed my undies" sheeite the other side of Davenport, Rhode Island? I saw 'em at Popkomm and ended up crawling back behind the equipment and going to sleep 'cos I didn't have anywhere to stay that night (Damn me for not even checking with my friends before I just decided to show up in Koln, I guess). Whatever. Oh-- n' on another note entirely-- and I know this hurts since most of the people on this list would swallow the worms out of every tequila bottle they've sucked down not to have to associate themselves with those damn indie-kids that look so goddamn cute-n-happy all the time by even so much as glancing sideways at something on Up records --but swallowing a little pride (and the worms, don't forget the worms) and checking out the Pastels Remixed CD on Up might be worth anybody's while who is a purveyor of serious CHEEEEESE. Just do it for the Mouse on Mars, Stereolab, 'n John McEntire tracks alone. Dear god. Straddling the indie fence and liking it Matt If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up.

No. :-) I reckon they manage to re-create exactly what I don't like about fusion quite nicely. I do really enjoy some of their stuff, but mainly when it's a bit more crunchy and mad. It makes me laugh reading what I just wrote, cos normally I'm saying the reverse if anything ("they're OK, but a bit hard - their mellow tracks are cool"). Michael np. I do find it interesting the way they're commended up and down IDM when other artists doing similar things are thoroughly mocked. I also find their old hardcore roots ("Mr Kirk's Nightmare") amusing and enjoyable.

Modest Mouse rule, I need to buy one of their albums.

Screw that, I'm in the SubPop singles club. I liked Matador before they were releasing techno. I'm getting recommendations on pressing plants from friends who run indie labels and pressed 7"s. I'd wish IDM to be the least closed-minded mailing list, but it ain't sometimes...
