Am I the only one that thinks this is a bit silly? Auctioning off a magazine on an idm list that serves largely as a font catalog just becuase the design company featured designes a lot of album covers?!?! I mean, offering hundreds of dollars for a twelve inch is going to far, but I find this especially crass because Dave is responding to somone's offer to not only scan in the article for people, but convert it into a PDF file as well!!! If the person who originally offered to scan it is still interested, I offer to put up the files on peachfuzz so those of us who just want to read it out of curiosity can do so. I agree that NOW I'm off topic, but I will post this response and nothing more on the subject. Who are you to decide what's silly? If people want something, it's up to them to decide how much it's worth to them (e.g., the Mask 12"s).

What's crass is your belief that scanning in the entire magazine is a fine thing to do. It's copyrighted, therefore it's illegal to do so.

And what's stupid is your offer to do something illegal on a public list. What's really stupid is your trying to decide what things are worth to other people. Very few things are "worth" what people pay for them, if all you consider is the materials that went into the making of them. If it's not worth it to you, by all means don't pay. But don't begrudge others who want something more than you, and are willing to spend more than you to get it. Dave

Yes you're the only one... The reason the issue is worth alot is not because it is IDM related, but because TDR did some pioneering work in fonts. Most of the people that want this magazine are interested in design, not the music. Because there is a cross-section of DR fans on this list as well, it seems like the ideal place to auction it off. Also, keep in mind that Dave, who is auctioning the item, has been helping listmembers for years get cool stuff for cheap with EAR/Rational. If someone's willing to pay for the magazine to help out Dave, I for one, am all for it. -Mike

it would only be illegal if I did it without getting permmission (see my original post below)

also, the idea of calling foul with respects to copyright and dr strikes me as a bit ironic seeing that they're some of the pioneers of "sampledelic" design, and have been prone to using appropriation themselves quite often. but then, that's an arguement that goes back to dada, me thinks... (not of course to say that what I was proposing was "appropriation", more like archival, but whatever eh?) later q
