Ersatz Audio - The Forgotten Sounds of Tomorrow This compilation from the appropriately named Ersatz Audio (their web site cites the dictionary definition: ERSATZ: serving as a substitute, synthetic, artificial) is what techno would have sounded like if it was invented in 1982. Selected from the Ersatz back-catalog from the last five years, sixteen tracks of robotic, retro-futurist dance music with a very european sound which is unexpected from a detroit label. Harsh, needling synth melodies, clean, minimal electro rythms and the occasional new-romantic monotone vocal delivered with a delicious sense of irony. Nice artwork too. Wonderful. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

People don't realize how big European synth pop was around here... Check Dan Sicko's _Techno Rebels_ for the lowdown. -d.w. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Actually I do - 'cos I've read that book. As you say though, it's not the sound most people associate with Detroit, rightly or wrongly, and maybe it's strange that there are not more producers of that kind of stuff in Detroit considering how big the scene was. Techno Rebels is a great book, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the music. yes, this is absolutely wonderful. ersatz audio put their heart and soul into their label and should be supported. attention is paid to the music and the design aesthetic. many other labels do this too, so i'm knocking anybody. bmg's column in metro times a couple issues back talked about their art show. andrew duke Ross Balmer wrote:
