I spotted in the latest s://kimo new release list that Mike Ink has repressed his 10 volume Studio 1 12" series. Anyone have opinions about these releases? Are they worth picking up, or will the CD compilation suffice? what are they similar to? any real audio or mp3's out there? Keep in mind that i am a vinyl junkie, so the fact that 10 12"s will run me $100 and the CD will run me $18 is really not a factor. Yes, i am that silly. steve.

Barely related but - today while discussing the paucity of locally available vinyl with a DJ friend, he mentioned that yet another DJ had a collection of 12" that had different coloured labels, which all just said "Studio 1" (they were bright colours like orange, blue, green, etc). Any clues as to who this might be? I said that I was under impression that Studio 1 is a German label - is this right? From the deepest darkest tip of Afrika - I *

Well, they are extremely similar to each other... My local store had them all in, and I listened to most of them, and picked out 3 that stood out, but they are all much of a muchness. 4/4 tech/house rhythms (pretty funky ones) deep dubby bass lines (real deep) and minimal one, or if you're lucky perhaps two note 'melodies' repeating, fading in , interfering with each other (if theres more than one, which happens occasionally), and fading out again. I like 'em. They are fantastic for mixing, cos they go with just about anything. Especially each other, for more interference pattern excitement. Ooh, I just though of something they're kind of similar too - Brinkmann's girl's names records. CheerioAndrewC.

I think it was the green one and the silver one that I thought stood out, as I jogged through them all in a shop. I guess I recommend those if someone was buying them without hearing them first... They were a little too straightforward for me, as I like the minimal records that sound like shuffling frog-croaking-noise or "gravel house", as I've started calling it. That is where the miminal tracks sound like a cardboard box of gravel being shaken in a shuffle like a cabasa. ...maybe a noisey toad or belching whoopie cushion in there too... This is what I like about a few of the abstract Profan 12"s ("Diskoschlafen 2000"?) solenoid

What relation do the Profan 12" have to their CD's? I only have the "purple" and "green" CD's and they are both excellent, not anything I would call straightforward. The "purple" CD is the Studio 1 Variations by Thomas Brinkmann (great introduction to his work, although a bit simpler in a way when compared to the "Totes Rennen" CD), and the "green" is the M:I:5 CD, also excellent, built out of sampled loops which layer and drift out of sync, kind of a "heavier" version of Brinkmann's approach minus the vinyl clicks). This stuff is experimental and loopy, not at all danceable. Maybe this is the "gravel house" you are talking about? Whatever it is I'm definitely looking for more from Profan, should I just buy random 12's or are there specific ones to get? --Harvey

These are the original pressings of the Studio 1 12". Minimal packaging, no titles, some have a number written in the vinyl in the runout groove, others have not. They are identified by their label color.

Heehehe...I have the gold and the purple - the purple is fantastic. In a similar vain is the Flexitone (ectomorph alias) track on the second Interdimensional Transmissions "From Beyond" 12" called "I am sitting in a version". Incredibly crisp 808-by-way-of-Cologne percussion. I was just mixing this with the purple studio 1 last night, as a matter of fact. Bill Andrew Cowper wrote:

last week I got the studio 1 CD. There is very little information on it (no track listing) but my friend Dan k said it is a compilation of all their singles minus the best three. So now I am searching for the said "best 3" because the CD is pretty dope. Minimal dubby techy housey.
