moshi-moshi.
i am intrigued by the fishcake compilation of icelandic electronic - the
best description i've gotten is "sahko vs. heroin house." can anyone
elaborate? is it generally gritty/organic a la chain reaction, or more
synthetic and dull like mike ink? not that it really matters, i'll
probably buy the damn thing anyway.
bought recently the arovane, chris de luca and metic _sixto novaton_
12".
arovane i found disappointing - edging too much towards autechre
territory with the complex rhythms and chopped melodies and not enough
of the DEEP atmosphere of the first 12". still _great_ mind you, just
could've been way more expressive/impressive.
i was pleasantly surprised by the de luca - very nice melodies without
that video game/kraftwerk crap going on. not blindingly original, but
good - much better than fungstorunk, i think. simple, but effective
rhythms compared to that stuff.
metic - ah! - takes me back to when rephlex was a decent label that had
a reason to exist. crunchy beats, a heaping tablespoon of distortion,
some surprises, a little funk, a sense of humor. my only complaint is
that the vinyl was pretty noisy on my (sealed) copy. dunno if this is
their glitch or it happened in transit to the record store. of course,
now that i've been listening to brinkmann and pole so often, i tend to
integrate external noise into the music without thinking about it; this
is good when you have a half-assed turntable like mine.
also got gal costa's s/t 1969 album - fat-ass psychedelic tropicalist
stuff, mixing samba, fuzz guitar, studio trickery and gal's lovely
voice. not that anyone on this list would care about it.
"yo, scratchie!"
"what you want, k.c.?"
"creativity... a little originality."
