Hello While doing a deep scan for signs of Mouse on Mars at a certain online music store, I found this entry. What kind of music do the Pastels make? It appears to be a brand-spankin-new release (1/99).. anyone heard it? Lots of interesting parties involved. PASTELS / ILLUMINATI $12.40 -- UP65 -- UP -- 1/99 attic plan - (mouse on mars remix) cycle - (my bloody valentine remix) frozen wave - (flacco remix) leaving this island - (jim o'rourke remix) magic nights - (my bloody valentine remix) on the way - (the third eye foundation remix) one wild moment - (stereolab remix) remote climbs - (cinema remix) rough riders - (future pilot aka remix) rough riders - (the make up/mighty flashlight thomson colour - (to rococo rot remix) viaduct, the - (bill wells remix) viaduct, the - (ian carmichael remix) viaduct, the - (kid loco remix) windy hill - (cornelius remix) Brad onlast: Jon Hassell - Dream Theory In Malaya Oh by the way, just want to add my two cents about 'City Lights'.. definitely a favorite of mine. Mix with Kraftwerk's 'Numbers' for some real fun. ;)

I couldn't disagree more. I'm not familiar with most of the original tracks but I think it's a great set of remixes. The MoM remix is particularly good. It takes a muffled vocal loop, layers up a bit, shoves on a large chunk of the original vocal before losing the singing and letting rip with fast percussion and silly noises. Then it calms down and the nice muffled vocal loop returns. It seems to me that there are two ends of the spectrum when it comes to remixing a track: (1) The originals crap so I shall take nothing little or nothing from it and basically create a new track. (2) The orignal is _so_ good that it would be disrespectful to alter it in any major way so I shall just put a different beat on and maybe make the intro a bit longer. The overall feeling I get from this album is that the majority of remixers have hit just the right mark for a project like this. The remixers clearly wish to retain some elements of the original work (to varying degrees) but there is no awe or reverence that might prevent them from having some creative input. It comes across as a series of collaborations more than mindless remixes and consequently hangs together as an _album_ rather well. Nick
