i had the same problem, and it's easier to fix than you think, although the solution sounds ugly: you've gotta turn the whole unit upside down and take out all the screws holding the molded-rubber bottom in place. once you've got that off (be careful) you can push the spindle back up, and then replace the rubber bottom & screws (just don't lose any! there are a bunch). i've done this several times, and while it's a pain, it does the trick.
