I think it'd take a bit of a redefinition of IDM to find some strongly melodic tracks. :) If you mean pleasant, (largely) tonal and developing riffs and harmonies, I'd heartily recommend Sun Electric's two most recent full lengths, 'Present' and 'Via Nostra', particularly the former. The Sybarite tracks on this comp are particularly melodic, they remind me of the very emotionally open tracks of Cylob's "Cylobian Sunset", a classic album btw. solenoid

ok off the top of my head... ICCT Hedral, Aphex Twin Papua New Guinea, Future Sound of London Secret Stair Pt. 1&2, U-Ziq Pretty much all tracks on Iaora Tahiti, Mouse On Mars Phlax, Jega Everything You Do Is a Balloon, Boards of Canada Slip, Autechre and on and on and on.... ..I chose these tracks because they are strongly melodic, most "IDM" is structured with melody, you will rarely find any music, unless it's avante garde, without melody. Alot of people hold the popular definition of melody, that melody = pop music or something like that. It comes from a general lack of musical knowedge, which is ok I guess, it's harmless in this case besides that it may cause some slight miscommunication. And might I remind you that for the most part the reason much "IDM" isn't highly popular is simply because it lacks lyrics. I can't imagine how popular Sean and Rob would be if they wrote lyrics and sang in their songs. Stupid people have a hard time accepting and/or understanding music without lyrics. I have a hard time understanding those people. I have two friends (more aquaintences) that listen to loads and loads of synth pop,.. I bring over my music and although they put on their fake smiles and grin and bear it.. they constantly disrespect the music I listen to, although unknowingly, purely and ONLY because it lacks lyrics. Stupid people make me very angry. -allen

You could try the 'Delph' album on Blue Pool records. There are some strongly melodic tracks eg 'Tatra' (which was also featured in a different mix on the cover CD of Future Music a couple of years back before the album release). If you want to check them out there are some Real Audio samples on their web site at www.bluepool.demon.co.uk/delph - in the section marked 'sounds'. The band are based in Manchester, UK and have had stuff out before on Rumour Records and Phantasm. Only available by mail order outside the UK at the moment though - sorry. I know there's supposed to be a new comp. from Underscore coming out. From what I know of the people on that label it should be melody-focused. Nothing makes a song stick in someone's mind like an unforgettable hook... --Geoff

Yes, Orbital is about the best I've found so far in terms of melodic idm, along with the original AI comps, and some of the music on Eye-Q (a bit trance for the tastes of this list, perhaps). 3

I can only think of one track on those AI comps that has a melody ('Arcadian'). I'm beginning to think I have a verrrrrrrry different take on melodies to most people on here. Basically, a riff =/= a melody, IMO. More specifically, shifting or building harmonies (layering riffs and/or chords) is not melodic development. I would say a melody is a lead line - a solo sound that progresses and changes over more than a bar or two, _generally_ without much repetition of form. From the recommends people are making about melodic stuff, it seems to be all about the timbre of the sounds, ie. if they're clean synth sounds, it's melodic. I was glad to see someone at least suggesting Mouse On Mars. Anyway, I know I'm being anal, but I just wanted to make a comment cos I find strange. If people get what they are after by asking for something "melodic" then who am I to complain. :) Michael ____________________________________________ "Also, he has automatic evasion devices" http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~michael/jj.html
