interesting how many young, upstart labels are rediscovering the 7-inch format. v/vm, mego, suction, skam, diskono, and now the tom label have all turned to 7-inches either for one-off releases or for whole series. in america, the 7-inch is the quintessential emblem of independence from the "mainstream" record industry, the clearest statement of a decision to attempt to operate and survive outside of that industry's profit-first logic. i can't say for sure that that's what's happening here -- it's a cheap format, and that's probably the ultimate impetus in both cases -- but it's at least interesting to watch the associations mutate from decidedly rock origins (at least in america) and into abstract electronic music. sc onnow: novisad : novisad (tom)
