A friend of mine in Britain owed me some cash, so I told him to pick up a few UK-only releases and send 'em to me stateside, including the 2-CD version of Grooverider's Mysteries of Funk. When he sent it to me however, it turned out to be just a single disc -- definitely the UK edition, purchased right at an HMV on Oxford St. Is the 2-CD a limited-edition version or doesn't it exist at all? Can anyone clue me in? I'm just realizing now, that I got paid back the equivalent of $24 to be sent the same disc I could've picked up in the U.S. used for $8 -- doh! Another question: am I missing out with just the single CD? .John.

There is definitely a 2 CD version, I'm fairly sure it's Limited though. Still fairly easy to find though, even in places like HMV. Excellent album as well, BTW. If it was purchased in Oxford Street, they of all HMV's MUST have had the double album. Obviously, with any album released as a double and then a single album you will be missing out, especially as the vast majority of the tracks on disc 2 are new ones and not remixes of disc 1 tracks :) Bye, PS : This is my first ever post to this list, so... erm... I like it quite a bit. Only one track, "Where's Jack the Ripper," really hits that Optical peak though. Of the rest, "Cybernetic Jazz" and "C Funk" are still excellent. I didn't really mind the vocals on "Prototype Years" (I'm not saying they stood out by any means), and there are a few tracks here with that same sort of housey, fusion-soaked sound -- two with female vocals, plus Cleveland Watkiss on another. The whole album compares to Adam F's "Colours" quite well -- though the breaks themselves are quite different, both albums go back and forth between quiet storm/fusion type backing and the really dark stuff. Of course, with the credits -- "All tracks written by Grooverider/Optical, all tracks produced by Grooverider/Optical" -- it makes you wonder who's doing what...

If it helps anyone figure out possible differences between versions, below are the track times for my 1-CD British version. Several of the four-minute tracks could easily be edits... Grooverider / Mysteries of Funk (1-CD UK): Cybernetic Jazz (9:10) Rainbows of Colour (4:17) On the Double (4:01) Time & Space (7:11) Where's Jack the Ripper? This is my favourite track as well. Quite a few people have been voicing concern about how much influence Optical had on the album though.

Right, just to clarify this for you, here are the times on the 2 CD version :

He did all the good parts. Rider was responsible for all the awful bongos and sappy vocals. ;-) Actually, I was a bit disappointed with the LP version, especially since they pulled a lot of the uncleared samples which made tunes like 'Where's Jack the Ripper' so wicked. Also, with exception of Ripper and 560, most of the tracks didn't end up as dance floor friendly as people were expecting, even optical himself. One of these days, I'm going to borrow my roommate's 2 cd version and give the whole damn thing a good listen while reading a book or something. word to the mothership, brock
