My record store bud finally ordered in the 3 volumes of Raymond Scott's "Soothing Sounds For Baby" which I've been wanting for a couple years, and any of you who want to hear who the Aphex Twin is channeling, this is the shit! Check out www.raymondscott.com, and www.basta.nl. In case you don't know, Raymond Scott invented the musical sequencer. He was doing it during the 1950s -- with mechanical relays and tubes! kent williams -- kent@avalon.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah, it's an amazing set, the vinyl box set is cool, as the records have the original artwork as well... check out this press release about the upcoming raymond scott release... dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ RaymondScott.com is accepting pre-orders for MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. (Basta Records 3090782), the long-awaited release of RAYMOND SCOTT's 1950s/60s pioneering electronica. MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. is a 2-CD, 69-track edition featuring over two hours of Scott's previously unreleased electronic wizardry, packaged in a 144-page, full-color, hard-bound book. MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. features music machines designed & built by Raymond Scott, such as the Electronium, Clavivox, Circle Machine (early 'sequencer'), Bandito the Bongo Artist (early 'drum machine'), and more. The album includes "non-kiddie" collaborations with pre-Muppet-era JIM HENSON. The book features interviews with those who knew and worked with Scott, including Moog synthesizer inventor ROBERT MOOG, along with countless previously unseen photos, lab notes, US patents, and scrapbook items. Although the US release is scheduled MAY, 2000, it is available exclusively from RaymondScott.com on APRIL 3rd. For ordering instructions, email: info@RaymondScott.com More info & preview MP3 clips here: <http://raymondscott.com/mripr.html>http://RaymondScott.com/mripr.html ''Raymond Scott's electronic work had been long out of print, but the pieces of music on MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC., recorded in the fifties and sixties, sound like nothing so much as the future.'' -P. Buck, R.E.M. ''MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. is truly an inspiring album. Very well compiled and presented, it gives you a good look at Raymond Scott's great work which has many repercussions in various fields relating to sound. Scientific, futuristic, novel, as well as humorous and dreamlike. Mad, but the kind of mad I aspire to be. Raymond Scott truly was ahead of his time.'' -Keigo, a.k.a. CORNELIUS ''MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. is a brilliant collection of Raymond Scott's difficult-to-find electronic work. I love the packaging, and the interviews are incredibly interesting and informative.'' -A. Utley, PORTISHEAD ''The MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. package is perfect -- and the music is too perfect!'' -Y. Konishi, PIZZICATO FIVE ''Tireless dedication and uncompromising perfectionism is evident in every detail of this wonderful collection. From the astonishing sounds to the beautiful packaging, MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. is an essential release of pioneer electronica, adding yet another page to the ever-growing legacy of American maverick Raymond Scott.'' -JOHN ZORN ''I rate Raymond Scott as one of the greatest music technology innovators the 20th century. Many musicians on the charts today are using his ideas fairly directly. His vision was so wide, that today it is impossible to turn on a piece of equipment in your studio without automatically issuing a benediction to the spirit of Raymond Scott.'' -M. just got this last night--very interesting! don't expect _soothing sounds for baby_ though. this is a collection of unreleased noodlings and advertising jingles (some both with and without the voiceovers--one of which i swear sounds like Ken Nordine) from the 50s & 60s. it's still VERY COOL, as is the booklet (more like a book!) the CDs come in, but be prepared for some serious kitsch. ks

Anyone who is into Raymond Scott at all, should DEFINITELY check out Manhattan Research Inc. I just picked it up today and so far its pretty incredible. Not only does it include 2 CDs of unreleased Scott material from the 50's and 60's, but it also includes a 144 page mini-book covering all sorts of parts of his career including his many electronic musical instruments/machines, collaborations with Jim Henson, and interviews with Bob Moog. Damn this shit is cool!!!! I'd have to completely agree with Ken. This material is a big precursor to a lot of electronic music today and it has held up incredibly well. Included on the discs are also a lot of commercial jingles and soundtracks that Raymond Scott did. Perhaps this explains why we find DnB fluff in commercials all over the place today. Electronic music has always had a place in commercials! Just kidding, lets not extend that idea any further than this post. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles R.
