I just saw the Japanese lounge group, Pizzicato 5 on the comedy Central show, Viva Variety. To me, they kind of sounded remotely close to The Gentle People. I know The Gentle People did some remixes for them, could someone please give me a run down on any available material. Thanks, Scott ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

The bird thing (I heard it's a doggie, but I don't know) is called Nauga :) The Gentle People have 2 remixes on Combinaison Spaciale (Matador/Caroline) one of "Good" and the other one of "Contact". The 10" version of CSpaciale has a slightly different version of one of them. Although the remixes are quite cool, both the original songs are far better. Talking about Contact, (original by Serge Gainsbourg for Brigitte Bardot), it first appeared on Romantique 95, one of p5's albums and was produced by Towa Tei. The curiosity of this song is that it contains a keyboard line "inspired" by Kraftwerk's Pocket Calculator. This version hasn't been released but in Japan because of this but some months ago Matador started releasing a series of 12"s with remixes of p5 songs. The first one was Dimitri from Paris doing Contact... There are also remixes of their latest album, Happy end of the word, by 808 State, Daniel Miller & Gareth Jones, Momus, Oval, etc, etc Scott wrote:

I haven't heard anything about Matador releasing this one. Did you get the version with the fancy packaging? It came with lots of little goodies, like mini paper filmstrips of P5. Hanging by a thread as far as IDM goes, but if you like P5, check out Fantastic Plastic Machine's new album Luxury, out in Japan only I think. It's on P5's Readymade Records. The FPM sound is similar to P5, but I find them a bit more varied, lush, and decadent than P5, if less consistent. Both bands are basically a Shibuya-kei Tokyoite dude having fun with his amazing record collection. The Gentle People serve as vocalists on one track called Honolulu, Calcutta. The album reminds me a bit of Tipsy in parts. Cheers, James Jung-Hoon Seo jseo@redsky.com Red Sky Interactive 921 Front Street San Francisco, CA 94111 (415) 392-2500 x250 http://www.redsky.com
