It refers to the fact that CDs are 5 inches in diameter. Yes, full length
CDs are the same size, but I guess since vinyl singles are commonly
referred to as 7" and 12", someone or other decided that CD5 was a good
moniker for CD singles. It also serves to differentiate them from 3 inch
CD singles - or CD3s - which were much more common in the early days of
the medium.
