I know Underworld's not exactly IDM, but I am sure there are plenty of people that have some interest in them still. At the last minute I got a free ticket and decided to go. When I saw them at Organic 96, I thought they were really really good. At that show they played all their best songs and it was non- energy. This time around they played alot of their new material which is really BORING. I think they think as long as you have a pounding 909, a weak typical techno bassline and some vocal ramblings than you got yourself a tune! This stuff was so pointless and mediocre. I doubt their new album will be good. One of the tracks almost sounded like Nitzer Ebb the way Karl Hyde sang it. The lyrics were horrible... one song kept saying "push it push it" over and over and I think there was a song that kept saying exercise or something like that. They sound really uninspired and lacking good ideas for material. Speaking of their old tunes. They played alot of their classics: Cowgirl, Rez, Rowla, Cherry Pie, Pearls Girl, Long Train (I think that's the name), Born Slippy, Nuxx. Some of these songs were done well and alot of them were pretty blah or just not as good as they should be. When I saw them in 96 all of their tunes sounded good. This time around it was quite a different story. This was a truly disappointing night. I was bored with most of there set. I highly doubt I will ever go see them again. And I especially doubt I will like anything off their new release (which I think is slated for march). It's too bad that they have gone down hill because I found there last cd to be pretty good. The friend I went with thought they were pretty weak as well. I think he was surprised at how bad alot of there tracks were. Meat Beat Manifesto are playing tonight. At least with them I know I'll get a good show! _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

first, let me echo Will's statement that this is not exactly IDM. i'm sorry if it's not that intelligent, but you try to convince the crowd i saw last night that it wasn't dance music. Will Samuels wrote:

i too came upon a free ticket at around 8:00 p.m. and decided to go. sounds like there were a lot of free tickets floating around. like Will, i like a lot of the underworld material, and that last album still puts me in a good mood sometimes. 'born slippy' is one of my favorite 12"s of all time. i also dug their performance at organic 96. last night had its ups and downs, though. the classics have never sounded better, with some great changes to 'born slippy/nuxx' and 'cowgirl'. there is little doubt in my mind that they do indeed mess around with their music quite a bit live, since you can watch the two blokes up on the stage with their entire mixing board messing stuff up the whole time. they even had some technical difficulties more than once during the show, but for all i know that could have been the dat machine queuing. that singer guy has got to go, though. all i could think of the whole night was the singer from everclear crossed with the fella from that band 'live', both of whom i would love to smack around a bit. the new material was indeed quite uninspired and less than intelligent, nothing new at all. one of them was nothing more than yet another take on the acid techno thing. very average overall. i would have been very disappointed if i had paid to see the show, but i can't get too mad when the show is free. i did get to dance a bit, which is always welcome on a monday night. i have to add that the sound was very crisp and clear and the visuals were very well done. the mayan is a cool place to see a show. it's not cramped small, but it is far from immense. that's all. stv mrlumpy@peachfuzz.net (i just got to teach my new e-mail program's spellcheck a new word: techno)

They did a much better job translating their songs live in 96. Did you think the song from the Batman sdtk - Moaner was good? I thought it was terrible. At first I thought it was some crap they just decided to throw to the label to make a quick buck. After hearing alot of their new songs last night and how mediocre they were I think they were serious about that Moaner tune. The beats were weak, the basslines sucked and the vocals sucked on the new material.

No it's not that song. It was in Trainspotting but not on the soundtrack...think the heroin withdrawal scene with the baby on the ceiling. It was also on a single. I think it was called Long Train. At least I didn't pay to see them. Can't wait for MEat Beat in a few hours. Cheers _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? From memory it's Long Dark Train, a remix of Dark and Long. It's on the single, and probably on the second Trainspotting album.
