Does anyone on the list have the name, address, & possibly a contact at any of any well known detroit techno labels in the USA? Or perhaps a US distributor who specialises in distributing this type of music? Replies by private e-mail please... *peace* ------- REPLY TO:- future@phatmac.demon.co.uk

There are many to choose from, off the top of my head- True People: The Detroit Techno Album. A solid 2 disc comp. Also within the past year there have been a plethora of artist 'retrospecive' comps (from the likes of Juan Atkins/Infiniti, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Drexciya (2 disc set you *must* own) and of course (though not new) the Psyche/BFC (aka Carl Craig) comp. Classic, classic stuff... peace Nate np: Art of Dance (yet another nice D-comp) On Mon, 9 Nov 1998, dj.mercenary wrote:

Which Detroit? Classic Detroit (the Holy Trinity - Atkins, May, Saunderson)? 2nd Wave (early UR, Carl Craig, others)? 3rd Wave (too numerous to mention)? Detroit Electro(Drexciya, Aux88, newer UR, Andre Holland)? Trying to make a "definitive" Detroit comp. is like trying to make a definitive Rock comp. - you're just going to start a lot of fights. The Detroit scene has a lot more longevity & diversity than the Seattle Grunge scene ever did. Here are some comps (labels in parentheses) for each period: Classic Detroit - RetroTechno (Network, out of print), Model 500 - Classics (R&S), Derrick May - Innovator (Transmat), Kevin Saunderson - Faces & Phases (KMS I think, UK version has 2 more tracks), Relics (Transmat/Buzz) 2nd Wave - Psyche/BFC - Elements (?), UR - Revolution For Change (?), Depth Charge 1 & 2 (Submerge), Biorhythms 1&2 (Network - these include some Detroit influenced UK Techno too, and are real classics, unfortunately out of print). 3rd Wave - True People (React), Origins Of A Sound (?), Deepest Shade Of Techno (SSR), Depth Charge 3 (Submerge) Detroit Electro - UR - Interstellar Fugitives (Submerge), Drexciya - The Quest (?) I suggest going to www.submerge.com and checking out what they have from whatever period Detroit you're interested in. If you're looking for the Network comps, email me, I spotted some copies lately. an 'almost perfect' list! add the Techno, and Techno 2 compilations on Ten (also released as 2xcd), Virtual Sex on Buzz (with uk leaders too), panic in detroit (buzz), intergalactic beats maybe and the retroactive comp on buzz. _all essential_ ____________________________________ forcefield | mindless entertainment http://www.sonik.demon.nl/forcefield
