I've got the CD version of Echodek, and it's pretty good, but I don't listen to it often. I find it really "heavy" sounding, but I don't really know how to explain that very well. I guess it's that the beats are quite industrial in their sound and programming, and there isn't much space in the mixes. It's certainly not a chilled out version of 'Vanishing Point' or anything. I think it's fabulous. One of the few dub discs I've bought recently (and I've been buying a lot) that I'd truly call "devastating dub". Brian On Wed, 28 Oct 1998, Michael Upton wrote:

if you like primal scream or on-u its probably the best thing they've done for a while. v. heavy but in a everything *and* the kitchen sink approach (some o' those bells ringin samples date back 10+ yrs, circa "ghetto dub" by bim sherman, and a lot inbetween). if you want dub that v. seriously sounds like your record collection falling down the stairs, and aren't a 70's purist then its worth getting. the cd versh. seems more playable (as in home vs. being a dj) tho' the box is supposed ltd, 'cept in a way that still sees it in record stores (i.e. no sell on profit). also not as much of bobby boy on the vocals (millions plus points). i think the 'industrial' tag on the beats is a touch misleading, but thats because i always thought industrial had shitty rhythmn, liked the noise part tho'. -martin

I agree with Michael - being both a huge dub fan and also loving Vanishing Point, Echo Dek is not a far enough departure from the original at all. As a stand-alone without knowing the Scream's album it might have impressed me more, but coming as it did hot on the heels of VP, I was disappointed that all Adrian Sherwood added were a few doorbell rings, the odd bit of hard panning and - tell the truth - not THAT much else.
