Yes well thanks for the long reply Brian and apologies for the long post in the first place. First of all, yep I know Brian's Datathief and I very much like the track on the 0161 comp (unfortunately the only track I've heard of Datathief). Had Che known this he wouldn't have said what he said either, so I want to clarify that in no way am I dissing your contribution to "IDM". And briefly yes I've made tracks out of samples (but don't have the equipment to sample off _vinyl_ yet) - see http://www.fourplay.com.au/sound.html I very strongly think Che and I and Irene are not in the minority in worrying about in tune music. There have been a number of posts to the list during this discussion suggesting that other people notice this too (eg the ones about Massive Attack). I am interested too in what people think about track 2 on Bricolage, but I know when I play it to many friends of mine they wince when it gets to that section, even if I don't tell them what to expect. I don't think being analytical about music is a bad thing, and I don't really know why those who aren't are so strongly dismissive of those who are. Ignorance is never a virtue, even if you seem to get along well with it, but worse than ignorance is the sort of arrogant ignorance that says "I'm better off [I didn't say better!] than you because of that". But I won't argue the point any more. As with Brian, this is my last post on the subject. But if Che, Irene or anyone else who cares wants to write, go ahead. Thanks, Peter. -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag.

Looks like I'm being called upon ... unwillingly she gets dragged in by the hair :-) Yip - I've had the formal classical training and yip, I wince if things are out of tune / flat / sharp / mismatched. I do not believe this is in any way related to my musical upbringing or background though. Tully, my husband, owns a studio, is a sound engineer / composer & producer - has perfect pitch - and cannot read a note of music and never had a formal lesson in his life. And it physically hurts him if things are off key. I've seen him screw up his eyes and rush to switch music off. Look - basically I don't give two fuxx what floats your boat - I'll ignore music that I dislike but won't stop anybody else from enjoying it if they're happy with it. No reason to hang ignorance on a flag though. Can we get this over with now ? I *
