i recently purchased plastikman - 'consumed'. i liked the cd, but have a question: do plastikman's other cd's, (sheet one, for instance) sound like this? I thought maybe consumed was a downtempo cd much like RDJ made SAWII. thanks, sam

no they're more acidy with lots high pitched chirping and louder thump thump beats, not as subconscious as consumed or as dark ...if you like that then try _concept 1 : 96CD_ by Hawtin as well, same vibe to it. spaul

also of course remixes of the same, by thomas brinkmann. i gather that his treatment of the original is fairly minimal.. i am told that he played the original records on a custom turntable with a second, adjustably-positioned stylus. err.. maybe this has already been discussed, but does anyone know quite why, apart from the conceptual or visual aesthetics, one might prefer une telle hydraique tt to.. say.. two turntables or a simple delay? also, if someone could point me to a t. brinkmann disco-graphy, i'd be much obliged. thank you, yon

the brinkmann concept 1 remix cd is no where near as minimal as the originals. in fact he adds alot of warmth, depth and insane panning effects to the mix giving the tracks a 'musik-style' plastikman vs basic channel sound which will make this cd one of my top 5 in 98.

Here is the info i have about Brinkmann's turntable setup: "I used a self-made turntable with 30 kilo plate, and two SME 309 Tone Arms utilizing both Ortofon and Van den Hul moving-coil pickups." Using the original Concept 1 records on his two-arm turntable, Thomas found unheard dynamics within these recordings. Even the imperfections of the vinyl pressing process find new character within his Variations. "The interventions with the actual vinyl are few: I slowed down the speed of the record and used the left pickup (arm) for the left channel, and the right pickup (arm) for the right channel. I found out that the use of different pickup systems for both channels is important for the sound," Brinkmann adds. "It's possible to hear a melodic displacement between the channels." Re-thinking the depth of sound, Thomas said, "I don't believe in creativity, but in sensibility. We have to invent the things to make them visible or audible, even though they had been there before, only invisible and inaudible."

I know that the "doris/clara" record is on Ernst, the label Thomas Brinkmann set up. I believe all of the releases thus far are women's names, and all are recorded @ 133.33 BPM (one full revolution on a 12" record) so very strange patterns are formed in the vinyl. Lance, I know Brinkmann's a favorite of yours, any more info? I don't own any of 'em yet, I've only seen one in the shop & wasn't taken enough to buy it at the time. Brinkmann has set up two labels for the exploration of ultra-minimal techno: Ernst and Max. Ernst, which has four records out to date, is supposed to explore the warmer side of minimal techno and features records named after women. Max, which has just one record out to date, is supposed to explore the harder/noisier side of minimal techno and features records named after men. All the records are produced using the ultra bizarre turn- tables that Brinkmann made himself giving all the tracks (including his recent Concept 1 remixes) a very unique sound. but don't expect the ernst or max records to sound like the Concept 1 remixes. The ernst and max records sound more like wierd versions of mike ink's studio 1 label material. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states
