I'm looking for a Chain Reaction CD recommendation. I've already got the Basic Channel and Maurizio compilations. I don't dislike the Maurizio by any means, but I really love the spaciousness of the BC CD, and I'd like my next purchase to be more in line with that. However, the BC goes about as far into abstraction as I'd like to get - I want something that's based on solid tracks and isn't simply disjoint clicks, pops, and reverb. I want something that sounds like really tight, minimal techno, only way out of focus, if that makes sense. Based on that, what should my next purchase be? C. -- Chris.Hilker (cspot@hyperreal.org)

Try Thomas Brinkmann "Studio 1 Variationnen" on Profan. Supposedly these are remixes of some Mike Ink stuff which I haven't heard, so I don't know how things were transformed. Anyway, there's very little reverb, a very tight sound but you can easily get lost in it due to the slowly shifting repetitions, rhythms going out of phase, stereo patterns etc. --Harvey

I'd say try either Porter Ricks' 'Biokinetics' or Substance's release (name's slipped my mind). The latter is more punchy than other CR releases, to my ears, and reminds me most of the BC comp. The former certainly rules on spaciousness, and is generally very much four-to-the-floor, etc. For that matter, Monolake rules on that front too. It goes quite downbeat and un-techno, but not in an abstract way. In fact the slow tracks remind me, mood-wise of early Orb. I've found Vainqueur the most abstract, followed by Various Artists. Chris, I'm personally partial to Various Artists' "Decay Product" CD. I find this disc has a perfect tension between structure, texture and decay. About half of the disc is beautiful blurred, "line noise" ambience, but the techno tracks have the driven pulse it sounds like you're looking for. As a second choice, I'd vote for the Monolake "Hongkong" CD. -d.w.
