Now out in the US is the very good debut from this German trio from the
Compost label. From Munich's downtempo scene Beanfield presents a mixed bag
of midnight funk and chilled grooves. The opening track "Planetary
Deadlock" slows down the vocoderized electro-funk of Zapp to a world-weary
pace. "Effet" also recalls an electronic Funkadelic vibe as a dirty
keyboard riff picks up the momentum. And "Elektro-Kraut" updates the funky
sounds to the techno 90's, with the playful stylings of a Clear label band.
The other side of Beanfield is chilled and smooth, as spacious synths and
electric piano lines set the scene for some nocturnal breaks. Beanfield's
debut also features their best-known track, "Charles," which treats some
moody Twin Peaks-style chords to the unforgettable bassline from
Eno/Byrne's "Regiment" (previously used by the Stereo MCs in "What Is
Soul?"). This US edition of the Beanfield disc also features two bonus
remixes by a Kruder-less Dorfmeister and Ian Pooley.
