I don't think extra tracks are a gift to the Japanese markets. I was under the impression that for foreign labels to release albums in Japan, extra/bonus material *must* be added to the recordings.

A little research revealed my statement was too broad. One explanation (via the Thrill Jockey site) was that bonus tracks make the Japanese releases more appealing to the Japanese consumer. Otherwise, people would buy U.S./Euro imports. Makes sense.
