Mr Brubakers Strawberry Alarm Clock NTONECD30 Riz Maslen's 2nd album is a keeper as she follows her mentors in Future Sound Of London into the darker territories of their Dead Cities album. The Neotropic sound is also a layered mix of electronic textures and sampled beats/instruments. The heavier side of her atmospherics could be horror film soundtracks ('Under Violent Objects' and 'Saucer Song') with the hard-hitting 'Untitled' coming on like a sci-fi electro-hip hop battle scene - all hovering UFOs and firing laser guns. Even when she plays with jazz ('Insane Moon') or easy listening ('Vacetious Blooms' also heard on the Funkungfusion comp) the mixes are ultimately thick psychedelic concoctions including voices from movies, World music chants, her own variations of Indian and operatic singing - even Jim Jones' crazy laugh from a Psychic TV record. Equally heavy is her more aggressive approach to rhythms on tracks like the upcoming Meat Beat Manifesto-style single 'Ultra Freaky Orange' and the Schooly D-sampling title track. There is also an ambient side to the Neotropic sound, which makes this disc a dynamic listening pleasure. 1. Mr Brubakers Strawberry Alarm Clock 2. Ultra Freaky Orange - next single in Nov 3.
