I can't answer that, because I unfortunately haven't yet heard Burger/Ink, 'Consumed', or 'The Koner Experiment'. I can't resist adding my two cents about Basic Channel-related releases though..

I'm confident that most anyone on this list would at least 'like' the Monolake release. From my limited perspective (Johnny-come-lately, vinyl-deprived) this is most fully evolved example (at least musically) of the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction sound. All the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction releases share a very inventive sound.. but while most lay those sounds over a minimal 4-on-the-floor, Monolake goes a step or two further musically. Great great stuff. If you really take a liking to the Monolake, take a gander at the other Basic Channel/Chain Reaction releases. I haven't yet heard the 'Session Elements' release, but of the others my personal favorites are the Basic Channel compilation and Maurizio compilation, rounded out by Porter Ricks 'Biokinetics'. If after those you're still into it, pick up the rest. A couple of questions for some of the other BC/CR listeners on the list.. What are your impressions of 'Substance: Session Elements' compared to other CR releases? That is, is it more stripped down (ie: Vainqueur, Various Artists) or.. not so stripped down (ie: Porter Ricks, Monolake)? And, what are some good artists to look into beyond BC/CR for a similar sound? I've got the new Pole CD and really enjoy it. I've got my eye on Burger/Ink & 'Consumed'.. anything else? Thanks in advance for any tips! - Brad

Yesterday I bought the new release on DIN by Arovane. There's also a 12" by Pole on DIN (both of them don't have a cat#!). Definitely worth checking. to tell you the truth, the consumed, burger/ink, and koner experiments releases have basic channel influences but none sound exactly like basic channel. you really need to get the basic channel eps (or at least the bc comp cd) to get a feel for the real sound of basic channel. i like all the releases you mentioned before but all pale in comparison to the basic channel releases.

you will not be wasting your money. the basic channel/chain reaction/m releases you need to get (in the order in which they appear): . Basic Channel comp cd (Basic Channel) . Porter Ricks: Biokinetics cd (Chain Reaction) . Monolake: Hong Kong cd (Chain Reaction) . v/a: Decay Product cd (Chain Reaction) . Substance: Session Elements cd (Chain Reaction) . Maurizio comp cd (M) . Burial Mix: Showcase cd (Burial Mix)

The Substance releases have much more of loopy percussive a minimal techno sound than the other bc/cr cds. So stripped down is an accurate description of it.

How easy is this to pick up? Been getting into more stuff like this thanks to listening to listening to new stuff on the Cognition Audioworks/In The Mix realaudio's and the occassional Inaudible show... Also, how does this Concept 1 96 Brinkmann Variations cd (M_NUS) go over... heard it referenced quite a bit in regards to the last Plastikman, which I *really* like (don't care to hear any opinions on this tonight, please... got *enough flames about this already* =) Any and all help direction appreciated brap@sonic.net[icq: 12645306] http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ sfwd prod | noisesoundnoise chris g. 1547 boston court #7, santa rosa, ca 95405

The Basic Channel comp cd shouldn't be too difficult to find anymore because it was re-released a year or so ago. Most of your online shops should have all the bc stuffs. I get all mine from bent crayon.

The original concept 1 records & cd by richie hawtin have a wierd minimal techno flavor. on the brinkmann variations thomas does some amazing things with the depth and intricacy of the tracks giving them a great basic channel feel. the Concept 1 96 Brinkmann Variations cd will be one of my top 5 of 98. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

for those Stateside, our (abused, molested) friends over at musicblvd.com have all the bc/cr/porter ricks/maurizio/monolake efa/caroline distributed stuff at decent prices (much better than cdnow). and it's only more attractive once you tack on a $10 off coupon or the 10% off coupon I received after only my first order. ordered pretty much the hole damn catalog at a little more than a tenner each. (I'm talkin' about disc format, btw.) np - Devo - Oh No It's Devo! (yes, I was a nerd in high school. can't believe this is _16_ f*ckin' years old. can't believe American reissued it. I mean, who the hell would buy this...? (got it on cut-out, tho! four bux.. why not? ah, the memories... oingo boingo next.) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
