I have been very surprised by the last two Sven Vath 12"s. Normally I
think he and Eye Q put out pretty weak techno. I normally wouldn't
even take the time to listen to one of his records, but when I noticed
that Claude Young, Buckfunk 3000, Johannes Heil, and Anthony Rother
remixed him, well I had to check it out

I am not really that great at doing review so I will be brief. The
Anthony Rother mix is pretty good for electro. The mixes that really
interested me were the Buckfunk 3000 mixes. They were really cool and
pretty odd. It almost reminded me of some of the Subhead releases, but
it wasn't as crazy. I really have to give him a thumbs up on these
remixes, very cool stuff.
I also recently bought his new CD Si Begg - Communter World, while
there was some interesting stuff going on, nothing really thrilled me.
It was all just pretty decent techno. I would however recommend for
people that are interested in him to track down his single on Drought.
That is one of the best records I have heard from him.
The Claude Young and Johannes Heil Remix 1 were some really good
minimal tracks. I used to be really into minimal techno, but it's all
starting to sound the same to me. So it's harder for me to get
thrilled by it. I do however really like these to mixes alot. If I was
spinning minimal, I would definitely throw these in my set. The second
Johannes Heil remix has some of the minimalness of the first remix,
but it has some really beautiful sounds...I guess you might call them
strings. The second mix I think has the most IDM appeal, very cool and
pretty sounding stuff that still has an edge to it.
With regards to Sven Vath's original versions, they really aren't that
bad...but they are lacking something. His album might actually be
decent for once.
I would like some more info on Anthony "Shake" Shakir. I have heard
some tracks from him over the years, and they have all been good. I
know Frictional is his label and I have heard a few of the releases.
I have recently bought two singles from him that i think are great.
Shake - ...Waiting for Russel (Frictional 08)
This four tracker from Detroit slips from Detroit techno to more
downtempo tracks. The track "Arise" reminds me of some stuff that John
Tejada has been putting out. My favorite track is "Detroit State of
Mind", this is a really brilliant piece of music. It's a downtempo
kind of trip-hopish. Once I have heard this track it stays in my head
for days. Great 12"
Shake - Club Scam II (Frictional 006)
Two of the tracks "Plugged in" and "Floorfiller" are both really great
house tracks. House is something I don't buy unless it is really
awesome. Both tracks sound like they would mix well with tracks off
the Roule label.
Both of these 12"s contain tracks called Frictional Beat No. 3 (on
Club Scam II) and No.4 (on ...Waiting for Russel). Both tracks are
pretty experimental and might appeal to some on IDM.
Shake also has a track on Freezone 5 called "You". I found this comp
to be very weak. The standout tracks for me came from Daniel Ibbotson,
Shake, and Ian O'Brien.
