a quick q: i was just listening to matmos's eponymous cd, and i particurally like the d'n'b-ish part in track 5, perhaps about 2-3 mins into the song. it only lasts for a couple of minutes, which is a sad sad thing. can any of you folks recommend any artists who have a d'n'b sound similar to that? crunchy, bassy, midtempo, mildly aggressive w/out overbearing... and another related q: i've never heard anything off of no-u-turn. *gasp* if i like third eye foundation/8 froxen module & think panacea is just ok, is it something i should investigate? thanks for your help. ethan

Investigate, yes, but they're stylistically not very similar. Mood-wise, yeah, sometimes they have a lot in common with the above. However, No U-Turn are much more floor-driven, and far less complex. Nico, who heads No U-Turn, has said in interviews that he aims to write tracks that sound like anyone could do them, to encourage the DIY aesthetic. ah fine don't offer me any help but instead force me to write some more. ;) the only matmos i have is the aformentioned self titled disc. i like it quite a bit. it doesn't really sound much like autechre, but probably would appeal to those that appreciate autechre's sensibility. the cd i have is quite varied, from a very long trancy tribal piece (which i like and i don't usually like that kinda stuff), to the d'n'b piece that i want more of, to coil-esque ambience. lots of quirky sounds. the music sounds a little static at first, but it is always evolving on a micro level. recommended. i'm not sure about their other cds though, as i believe that they're more in the cd fuckery realm, which may or not appeal to you... ethan

just fyi- their work with the 'disc' project (with lesser & kid606) is in the 'cd fuckery realm', but their other album, 'Quasi-Objects' (also on their vauge terrain label) is in a similar vein as their debut, and is brilliant. ml/vn// [o{st}m.rec]
