Never seen the film. Reviews were spotty and I was immediately suspicious of a film that advertised winning a "most daring" award. The book is eerily sexy and at the same time emotionally detached of itself. I feel like screaming by at 80 mph on a packed sidewalk after reading a couple of paragraphs, running over as many beautiful people as possible... <g> (I wonder if that qualifies as an orgy in Ballard's eyes?) Seeing as how we're discussing (or not discussing, oddly enough) electronic music on this list, this book is somewhat relevant -- dealing with behaviors such as: communication with others using technological devices as a medium (e.g., idm-list, irc); masochism as a means of dealing with others (e.g., the entire 'industrial' electronica genre: prodigy, nin, skinny puppy, et al.), etc. Interesting ground to cover, here. Alex ps. 'Passion' is an excellent, atmospheric work. I remember walking through the Aegytisches Museum in Berlin while listening to the third track off that cd. Breathtaking. --- Date: Wed, 9 Sep 1998 16:56:08 +0200 From: "Irene McC" <substar@iafrica.com> Subject: Re: (idm) reading list ...

Is it as stomach-churningly revolting as the film? ... np : Peter Gabriel's Passion - which I've finally gotten hold of! --- __________________________________________________________________________ Alex Reynolds Distributed Support Specialist Department of Biology School of Arts & Sciences Computing University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA email:reynolda@sas.upenn.edu phone:215.573.2818 Interviewer--what do the words mean? ugh - skip the movie, read the book. also by ballard - the short story "chronopolis". anyone who considers himself technoman or futurist or any other balogna name should read it. incredible. legandary pink dots "destined to repeat" * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com #### a fortune cookie i ate 08/06/98 told me: "a girlfriend is a wine bottle. a wife is a bottle of wine."
