just wanted to give a huge second to rowland's recommendation of System Error's _nothing_, on the headphone label. i'm still surprised this hasn't caught on amongst the idm masses...it was on my top 10 of last year and i still listen to it incessantly. i rate it next to hia's freefloating, if not higher since it's a bit more "of the moment" (stronger digital feel). rowland's comparison to what autechre might be doing if they hadn't, as greg derocher so aptly put it to me a few weeks back, "basically lost all interest in making music per se." amazing record. shame if you haven't heard it. sc

while i think im going to hunt down the sytem error now, im curious about the "lost all interest in making music.." thing. not to keep the whole autechre thing going, but im just curious if it was a joking comment because their stuff has gotten more abstract? and, if not, any justification of the comment? i might be biased (?), because i listen to A LOT of unstructured and "difficult" stuff.. but autchre still remains completely musical to my ears (not saying that they are better or worse off for it, just that itd be hard for me to argue that theyre not making music). chris.

well, music can be defined as organized sound, which of course autechre are doing. since they can't really put out an album without putting some sounds together, they will always be making music by default. with their last couplefew releases though, i've noticed them concentrating more on developing a way of creating sounds as well as a structural process involving time manipulation and the creative use of clicks. however, i hear the end result and i think to myself that they're so engrossed in the details of what they're doing that they aren't concerned with the big picture. the end result just winds up being evidence of the process, rather than a composed statement. their stuff sounds aimless and disconnected, a hallmark of experimentalism, but i don't really find alot of superexperimental music that sounds good. maybe their next album should be a book. eric onnow: schnittstelle (rather interesting)

i think it was a bit of a joke, actually. greg has enormous respect for autechre. sc
