A neat little record arrived in the mailbox today from some computer
geeks in CO tittled:
APPLICATION SPECIFIC PRESENTS:
FLORA & FUANA
- 9track ep by Gerald Wenzel and Kennith Morison
If you have finally been able to track down ANYTHING by Lexaunculpt
(we beachbums on the west coast are pretty luck Alex is so generous to
play out sooo much) and you like that type of thing, I demand you seek
out this FLORA & FUANA 12inch out.
Trying to describe this 12" is extremely difficult. for now I'll
describe it as a record that sounds like a bunch of machines (kitchen
machines esp) going mad together with some MAS and COMATOSE label
kinda sound. Maybe a little MARKANT too.
The aren't any track names unfortunately. the tracks done by Gerald
Wenzel are the more "experimental" atmospheric METASYNTH (mac program)
sounding stuff, while the tracks by Kennith Morison often employ a
static beat of what we've come to expect from the SCHEMATIC, SKAM,
GESCOM, Lexaunculpt, even ATOM HEART (track 4 side one) sound of the
last few years.
I feel terrible I can't put this SOUND DESIGN into words so I feel
like reciting from the insert that came with the record. It reads:
"Until October of 1997, I found myself content with making music
through the use of conventional midi hardware and software. However,
in October, I found myself exceeding the data transmission rates of
the midi gear I was using. Therefore I was unable to create a physical
representation of my musical ideas because of the technical
limitations. With my studio suddenly becomming useless for documenting
my musical ideas, I found myself turning toward more unconventional
means to create music. I disassembled everything in my studio except
for my Power Macintosh. I replaced all of the midi hardware with
computer manuals and began programming the sounds and sequences into
my computer through the use of carious sound synthesis techniques. The
tracks i have submitted for the Flora and Fauna ep are the results of
my programming efforts, my new approach to music" - Gerald Wenzel
(this sounds quite a lot like conversations I've had with Alex graham-
aka Lexaunculpt)
further....
"the tracks I've contributed to the Flora and Fauna ep are a
qualitative account of my personal research of three musical
disciplines 1. strict sound research throu experimental and technical
means 2. music history and 3. sonic arrangement" - Kennith Morison
personally i am VERY interested in the style of "music" (can it be
called so, he he he) cuz I am very much into sound design. So far
I've only come across a program called Metasynth for Power Mac's. Any
other programs you suggest pls let me know.....
