As the most anal retentive d.j (ex d.j. ) perhaps in the world, here is my solution to Brock's question of how not to fuck up record covers, which is 1/2 as important as not marring the vinyl, but still important. Sleeve your record in a plastic outer sleeve in *this* manner: Sleeve the jacket so it drops into the record from the *top*, i.e. opening at the top, jacket drops in. Sleeve the vinyl, in a paper sleeve, *behind* the jacket. Write your bpms or choice tracks/comments etc. on sticker labels on the *outside* on the plastic sleeve. Even if you're not into any of this, this method of sleeving is the *ideal* way to shelve records *spine side out* , library style, without messy plastic sleeves falling all over the place. I was going to recommend this one, but figured it was pretty obvious. Although I've never gone as far as clocking the bpm's of my records (way too lazy and it's more fun when you don't know!), I've always put all my LP's in plastic. But nowadays, carrying a flight case with 25 pounds of plastic and gatefold covers is getting old (as I am). Now when I'm playing out, I pull just the records that I want, in the paper inners and leave everything else at home in a stack. On most of them (especially whites, test presses and dub plates) I've written the artist and track on the inner sleeve, which have all be replaced with the type with plastic inside of paper so the hole doesn't rip out when you're sliding records back into them. Then the next day, you just pull them out of your box and put them back in the original covers. It only takes a few minutes and overall, it make's things a hell of a lot easier when you're mixing, freeing you from dealing with the numerous problems you will have when dealing with LP packaging in a dark club. Hope this helps, brock. ps. we jokingly call this method 'uk style' due to all the uk jungle guys who play nothing but plates & test presses and never have lps or anything with artwork.
