Hey all. I just went to see Pi at the New Directors/New Films series in NYC.
I went to see it because I'm a big PWEI fan, and i heard that Clint Mansell
was doing the music to the movie. I highly recommend it, not just for the
music (which was really great), but also for the movie, some twisted horror
comedy cronenburg tetsuo-body-hammer kinda thing, shot for $20,000 in New
York. Basic plot summary: pill popping obsessive genius discovers the
mathematical link that explains the stock market and everything else chaotic
in nature. Then, some crazy men in suits chase him for financial reasons, and
some Hasidic Jews chase him so that they can unravel the numerology of the
Talmud. The whole thing is really trippy, and amazingly well-shot really
highcontrast b+w. If you have any experience in NYC, like the XFiles, or if
you have any interest in math/chaos theory at all, go see this movie.
But the music is the reason I went, and it was really cool. I don't know
whether Mansell wrote any of it himself there was one noisey jungly theme
song thing which he might have composed, plus one minimal bleepy track that
kept on recurring. The rest of it was great too autechre, banco de gaia,
orbital... Sound effects were done by the guy who runs Foetus, and apparently
he's good friends with Clint. If anybody has a tracklisting for the
soundtrack, let me know, I forgot to write it down.
i know the movie is opening at the Angelika in NY in a few weeks, dunno about
nationwide release or video plans.
