It's sounds like your friend picked up the compilation _Chinese Whispers_ on
Sprawl. Here's the info:
"Unlike other remix albums, Chinese Whispers is a hermetically sealed
cyclical recording remix project, but with no original track to begin with.
All the artists participating had no idea who they were remixing. All they
were aware of was who was involved, who these anonymous audio snippets might
be from, not hearing the track they were remixing either. Stereolab provided
the original unconnected miscellaneous samples (i.e. not from an existing
track) to start the ball rolling, and nine remixes later were given the
final samples from the last artist's track (in this case T Power), to create
