I'm surprised nobody talked about Autechre's last night performance in Montreal. I was there but since I'm not a big Autechre fan I don't really have any special comment to mention. The show started one hour late, DJ Luv was pretty good, DJ Chantal's set was agonizingly long. I expected some lightwork but all we got was a few flashes and a stupid blue lightspot that stayed on for two hours. Then Dave Kristian came onstage. The first 15 minutes were awful but then he played this great ambient bit, it turned out to be the greatest moment of the evening. Then he left and Autechre appeared. They played about 6 or 7 different tracks that I didn't know. I liked maybe one or two. There was no big cheer and applause at the end of their act, I think that most of the audience didn't liked it very much as well, I might be wrong though, maybe they were too stunned. I didn't stay for the other DJ and the after-party. All throughout the night the sound was bad, lots of unwanted distortion I think, most of the subtilities of the sound were lost. Anyways, that's my short review. Say, did the RealAudio live stream work on Sugarrush? chris

Yeah I was there Friday night too. I was rather dissapointed. I only found the last little bit of Dave Kristians' set interesting, it just didn't really seem to be an apropriate kind of music to be doing, everybody i could see just sorta stood there and didn't really react, I don't think they liked it very much. And I found Autechres set to be rather disjoint. I think that the sound didn't help much, there was a hell of a lot of sizzle on those speakers, killing my hearing, and it seemed to be distorting. There was better sound in the bathroom, Where I could actually hear some of the melodies. And I left after derrick carters first song -<YUK>-

I was there also friday, the review is much the same; DJ Luv was good, saw the end of it only, but I liked it, but then came DJ Chantal, she had some good music, some bad music, but what was worse, is that she was not really DJing at all, a CD changer could do better and she was not always in front, she disapeared for lond period of time... Then came Dave Kristian; I half expected what he should sound, the first part was very experimental, very spaced out... The second part was ambient ( even had some keyboard playing ... :) ) I kinda liked it anyway... Autechre came out, with simple ligths ( no candles that I could see ) and the music came out very good, I don't think the sound was all that bad ( I just should never forget earplugs... ) they played "danceable" music, lot's of autechre'ish beats , some melodies, not much, and I did not really expect more, I think that many people were expecting more accessible music, I don't think that a lot of people in there were real fans ( I'm not, but I liked the early Ae stuff ). Than came the WORST ending of a show that I ever watched, Derek Carter came out played some gospel-chicago-house; as we watched from the second level, we could see the whole floor stop dancing at some points and kinda looking around wandering what's going on... now look what youve started! anyways, anybody who was there remember any of the tracks she played? i was trying to make them out but my attention span kept running out.... as for the autechre set: Sean was wearing a simple grey Volcom shirt (Volcom is the clothing equivalent of Skam, except unfortunately they make baby tees as well, so i hear)... Class act, Sean, youre really doing your best the spot the latest labels.... Despite this, it seems that the Ae guys suffer from severe delusions of grandeur when it comes to pants: save some fabric for us loose fitters, guys, this aint 1995. because of this, even though i was leaning on the stage, i couldnt catch the slightest glimpse at their shoes, so i have nothing else to report. shucks! jif

hot ??? what do you mean ? physically or musically ??? As I wrote earlier, she was not really there ... physically (and mentally) to show any sign of "hotness"; I wasn't close enough to the stage to see her better, and the tracks she played sounded like tracks from the "Blech" compilation... some were danceable some were not... Honestly, what are you lads like?! so its not her dj cred that matters, but "is she hot"? The times i"ve seen Chantal dj, I've been well impressed, and she looks lovely, a real classy lookin kind of lass. Imagine if me and Irene started to ask such questions about blokes djing, we'd be flamed rotten! (plus, anyways, can't think of any decent dj tottie, and I'm there to get deep in dancing, not to hang round the decks spottin or lechin all night).

hmmm...maybe we really were at a different party....I though sound was great...especially up in the balcony. Generally speaking earplugs are probably a good idea at a loud show...means you can live to hear another day. I forgot mine on friday and found that there were definately enough sweet spots where you could hear well with a lot of range and not have you ears bleed. I think the "unwanted distortion" might have actually been intentional noize. Howdy! Kandis here - long time lurker, first time poster. i too was at the autechre show this past friday in montreal, and i thought it was pretty damn good! in tru to form autechre style, they somehow managed to meld mechanical abstraction in a very organic manner. made me think of the movement of an insect, with its jointed legs and hardened exo-skeleton, mechanical motion, yet organic. i love dancing to the shit - so many beats to fit your body into. sexy too (but i wont expound)! and derrick carter did indeed follow autechre with big gospel infused vocals and disco beats, a strange follow up to what came before. funny thing, i had friends there for autechre, and others there for carter. my autechre friends said things like: "dancing to this just makes sense, my body fits in". my carter friends said: "this is not dance music". there literally was a mass exodus/influx at the end of Ae and the beginning of carter, one camp rolling in, the others rolling out (can't we all just get along?). anyway, as a spokesperson for sugarrush.com, i can say that ya'll will be able to appraise the autechre set for ya'll selves. it should be up within the next couple of days. meanwhile, you can hear tracks off there latest. (sorry there was no live feed, but just you wait....). cheers k k-rock (krod rock) mailto:kandis@sugarrush.com check it out.... http://www.sugarrush.com ICQ - 6876564
