I've held off this one for a while, mainly due to the off-putting doll's
head on the cover, but finally I've immersed myself in this album
from Sydney, Australia (Matsuri, 1998) ::: here goes -
What a genre-defying trip into a strange, strange world, It starts
with odd voice-overs, a promising bit of dub, erratic saxophone
squawks, bassy squelshes, a welcome beautifully deep ambient
groove, samples from an uncharted territory, some unconstrucive
noodling, spoken vox about 'the little green sticker' in an
underwater landscape and more than just a passing nod at the
trance-floor. Whew!
Maybe the lesson here is that it's impossible to please all people
at once, and it might have been a better idea to stick with one
direction, rather than a diverse eclecticism into a puree'd
headspace, but it should keep the Blue Room Released crowd
happy :-) I'd give it a 7/10 on a generally pleasing scale - it helps
to hit fast forward every now and then. I'd pronounce "Spliff" my
favourite track [which just about sums it up then, I suppose.]
Guess these guys have had one hit too many of that there
kickapoo joy juice!
