What with all the import ban type stuff being bantered about, thought I might mention that I picked up the Autechre import in an HMV (major music retailer) here in Vancouver today. Pretty cheap: $22, canadian. I also got WAP100 ($22). Couldn't really believe I was in HMV. bbn

Hmmmm. This makes me wonder... there's a distributor in Montreal called Nice Music who worked out a special import deal with Warp on the BoC and WAP100 so they could sell them here at close to domestic prices - perhaps they did the same with the Ae as well? Maybe the Nothing deal only applies to the US. Greg

I heard a funny story from one of the US distributers that is carrying the new Autechre album. I guess, due to the import ban, they were not able to buy the Autechre album from their normal source in the UK. So they had a friend of theirs in the UK show up in person to the UK distributer. When he got there he bought several hundred copies and then shipped them to the US distributer. Somehow Nothing found out and gave this US distributer a call and a thorough bitching out. But since this US distributer doesn't distribute any Nothing releases they just laughed and hung up on Nothing. These copies are the reason several US music shops now have the new Autechre album. It's good to see the lengths that distributers are going to get us the music we want. And, from what i understand, the Autechre import ban is only for the US, not Canada. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

I wonder if they'll hang up on Nothing's attorneys if they happen to call. I wonder if Warp will be doing business with this UK distributor that seems to be following a wink-wink business policy that obviously undercut's Warp's overseas licensing and will make it that much more difficult for Warp to make deals with potential licensees in the future. Has it occurred to any of the whiny Veruca Salt types on the list that the reason Warp tends to deal with dodgy labels is because more responsible businesses want no part of a licensing deal where they'll have to compete with greymarket import copies? Don't give me that mandatory simultaneous release crap - manufacturing and distributing a record throughout the US is an undertaking on an entirely different scale than doing the same in the UK. Hmmm, guess it's going to take a bit longer to get to a "global" economy than most pundits/visionaries thought...... cya brian -------------------------------------------------------- "The most dementing of all modern sins: the inability to distinguish excellence from success." - David Hare

I don't know much about laws, but what can an attorney from the US do to a somebody in the UK regarding a deal that's for the US only ? The UK distributor has (as far as I see) the right to sell records to whom-so-ever he likes. If this is a record-shop in the states than that's not the problem of the UK guy. Or am I mistaken ?

Would be true if WARP only presses the CDs for the UK, but AFAIK they do sell directly to their distributors in Europe as well. And this is surely not easy. Please remember that the records cross a border every some miles :-) Bye Sebastian -- Sebastian Herrfurth (seher@cs.tu-berlin.de) the Drome/NUF/SMC page - http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~seher/BerndFriedmann/ the Neotropic/SFWS page - http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~seher/RizMaslen/ the inofficial DJ Krush page - http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~seher/DJKrush/ a D&D/Myer/S'Apex page - http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~seher/DanielMeier/
