*Real* instruments suck. Vocals suck. Live sucks. If you want all that, listen to folk music. Give me the cold, hard, & artificial, baby. << </lurk> I *hope* you're taking the piss. Does Squarepusher suck because he plays live bass? What does it mean when one likes both electronic and acoustic music? My CD wallet currently contains Harry Smith's _Anthology of American Folk Music_ as well as a fistful of electronic CD's of various flavors, and stuff I'm almost embarrassed to mention, like Elvis and Chumbawamba's _Swingin' With Raymond_. What would you say if I stuck the lot in a blender and hit "puree"? Bwahaha! Oh damn, wait, Beck and the aforementioned Chumbas already did that. ;) Me, I like just about anything done well in the service of a specific artistic vision. Except opera. And I may yet discover an opera composer who blows my mind. As for the sampling debate, I'm reminded of Marcel Duchamp with his urinal and his mustachioed Mona Lisa. Was he an artist or a charlatan? Time has proven one can be both, 'cause he was. Which in turn reminds me of AFX. Oh well, I guess one man's eclectism is another's dilettantism. Or maybe at 31 I've outgrown believing that the music I listen to dictates who I am and the lifestyle I am supposed to lead. Or maybe I've seen too many promising musical movements die of inbreeding. <sarcasm> Or maybe I should just shut my piehole, 'cause I'm only on this list to try and complete my AFX collection anyway. </sarcasm> Sorry if this ground has been covered already. I have been away for a couple of days and I have a buttload of email left to go through. Peace, Mitch PS: Respect to the guy who name-dropped Joe Jackson. His _Will Power_ is a brilliant 'modern classical' album often found in cutout bins (at least in America). Don't listen to "No Pasaran" for the first time with a hot cup of coffee in your hand though, it *will* end up all over you. Now playing: V/A, _Avantgardism Drum 'n' Bass_ <lurk>
