Since you're such an expert, maybe you can explain what subtle nuances make Squarepusher drill&bass, & T-Power, Spring Heel Jack, Photek, & Amon Tobin (at least his faster tracks) something else? All use a combination of programmed hits & cut-up breaks (Amen used almost never) in varying ratios, and all have a much stronger emphasis on melody & density than mainstream drum&bass. Of course they all sound different, but to my ears at least, there's no more difference between them & say Black Dog, Autechre, & Beaumont Hannant, who all seem to fit into the same genre. I have to throw A Guy Called Gerald, 4 Hero/JOS, Chameleon/Chaos & Julia Set, and Talvin Singh into the "doing a lot more with fast beats than trying to sound like the d&b flavor du jour" genre, whatever you want to call it. Organic sucks. *Real* instruments suck. Vocals suck. Live sucks. If you want all that, listen to folk music. Give me the cold, hard, & artificial, baby. ;-) Che rock - rok (v.) - having a conventional and/or boring nature. ex: "Khakis rock". "That Rolling Stones show rocked". syn: suck.

Photek is jungle, not drill'n'bass. but your point here somewhat crosses paths with what I was trying to say.. why should we call it drill'n'bass.. it caused everyone to corrolate the next wave of big hits as being drill'n'bass tracks, and suddenly the wave became reality and now the wave has crashed and the ocean is calm again.

no way man.. there's only a few IDM hits that aren't organic, and those are mostly autechre tracks, that sound machinery clashing together.
quoted 1 line *Real* instruments suck.>*Real* instruments suck.
well, I don't believe this.. it is tough to incorporate real instruments (without using samplers). I fell in love with and will always be in love with the sound of the vibraphone, upon playing it at a jazz festival thing at school. (I just played with it while the bandmembers took a break) I can imagine making some KICKASS ambient tracks with that as one of the instruments. it's got it's own reverb, and it's own vibrato :)

well, I wouldn't go as to generalise it that far.. and just for those who read what I said before and thought that I am anti-vocal, just know that I hold anything Jimi Tenor has done close to my heart, and will always do so.. and I also put the latest Madonna album up there with what are the best albums as of late.. I mean there are lots of those.. it is definitely without a doubt thee best pop record to come out in 1998 (I dunno about bjork with mark bell, have not heard it..) but yes, the madonna vocals are a bit annoying, but it is after all, pop music, so. and most vocals do suck, because a lot of times it just ruins the music, just with the way a lot of times MC's ruin the music.. now there are of course exceptions. I saw LTJ Bukem DJ with MC Conrad and MC Conrad didn't ruin the music at all. Then I have a Sven Väth mixtape with some german MC that if I was there I would have wanted to throw my shoe at. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ 1cQ<->uIN \_____/ 1.3777993 "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron

Again, the distinction seems arbitrary. I bought several comps w/ "jungle" in the title (before I realized this was a bad idea), and I've got quite a bit of Photek (5 of the 6 PHTK 12s, numerous remixes, other aliases, and of course the Virgin stuff). Stylistically both Photek & Studio Pressure seem to have much more in common with the artists I mentioned than anything I've seen labeled "jungle". Maybe the Aquarius stuff is jungle. Is there any way to quantify or qualify why you'd label Photek jungle? Listen to The Hidden Camera, or the EBTG remix and tell me what's jungle about them. PS If anyone has PHTK 2 (Form & Function 2), and wants to trade it for any of PHTK 1-6, or some other Photek release, let me know. At 01:20 AM 7/9/98 -0700, zeus8 wrote:

^^^ Here's a clue people - this emoticon means "nudge nudge, wink wink, know what I mean, know what I mean, say no more, say no more, a nod's a good as a wink to a blind man". In other words, don't take it too seriously. So get over your own bad selves & learn to lighten up. Che rock - rok (v.) - having a conventional and/or boring nature. ex: "Khakis rock".
