Got a quick question for you gearheads out there... I'm looking to buy a pc laptop (prob. one of those nice dell inspiron 3200s) and I'd like to use it for sequencing/sample editing in addition to my work related stuff. One of the options is a port replicatior that replicates Parallel, serial, docking, monitor, game/MIDI, and USB ports. Do I need this to hook this up w/my drum machine? Or can I just use my MIDI box for my desktop Mac on the pc laptop though it's regular serial port? thanx for any help you have, Howie

If the laptop comes with a parallel or serial port then you don't need anything else for midi. Most Mac midi breakouts aren't compatible with PC ones, so don't count on using the one you have already. If you're planning to use it for sample editing, make sure you get a scsi port (for interfacing with scsi samplers). It's possible to get by just with midi, but transferring samples via midi (sds) is *slow*. bbn
