When I first signed up for this list a couple of weeks ago, I *thought* I listened to IDM, and a lot of it. I figured I'd be able to contriubte to some list discussions. However, message after message I see references to artists I have never heard of. And, well, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed! :) I feel the need for a IDM CD shopping spree, but I can't get *everything* talked about on the list, and wouldn't know where to start. So....I was wondering, if you had to pick, say 5 IDM CD's that you would recommend to someone who...ummmm just got into IDM....what would you suggest? Thanks! ooooh, I love questions like this. My top 5 recommendations would be: hab - maPod boards of canada - music has a right to children autechre - amber and/or tri repetae skampler - skam compilation on silent records black dog - spanners This is a good mixture of new and old school idm, and pretty much all of these discs are easy to find in the USA. Of course, I'm omitting a huge array of other artists and genres. Others I would recommend include Aphex Twin, mu-ziq, Plaid, Luke Vibert, Funki Porcini, Amon Tobin, Funkstorung, Jeswa, Atom Heart, tetsu Inoue, and a million others... I'm actually in the process of doing this very thing. Since I don't know what you have, I'll tell you what I am reccomending to my friend, who is a *true* newbie (Sorry Jim, but you are. :) ) : Autechre : Amber Aphex Twin : Selected Ambient Works II WARP : Artificial Intelligence I WARP : Artificial Intelligence II Speedy J : Public Energy #1 Plastikman : Consumed Seefeel : Quique These were based on what were mostly my introduction to IDM, and things which I enjoy most thouroughly. I can't guess as to whether these are all things you already have, or not. I consider them all to be excellent albums, and they are all widely available. I would also keep in mind when reading this list that a HUGE amount of the stuff discussed is not easily obtained, and not very common. This doesn't mean it's not excellent music - it just means that a limited number of people will have heard it, and it must be sought out. Good luck. :) On Tue, 7 Jul 1998, Keith Reinert wrote:

Dear Agony Auntie: I've been enjoying candyfloss all these years. Now someone's told me about Triple X Mints. Although I haven't actually tried them yet myself, I'm confused by the abundance of brands and varieties available out there. Could you please tell me your Top 5 favourite kinds, so I'll know which ones I'll like most? :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:| If ONLY it were that simple : to swallow down and assimilate other people's lists of what's important to *them* and make it our own... but since we're all individual, we have different taste and there is no such thing as an _objective_ 'must have' list of <name the category>. Go out, look, listen, be aware and discover what pleases *you* most. It's the serendipity that makes the most worthwhile fun. You make valid points, however, I remember when I was trying (struggling) to get into idm about 3 years ago, I discovered the IDM top 10 of 1994 list, and proceeded to buy nearly everything on it, and I was disappointed with none of them. I'm glad I did, because that introduced me to Ae, Aphex, Black Dog, and a whole host of others. Everyone's favorites lists are highly personal and subjective, etc, but for those of us who don't know where to start, it's really helpful to get some suggestions from the seasoned listeners out there. :) At 1:07 PM +0200 7/8/98, Irene McC wrote:

Without reading all the other replies (and thus running the risk of repeating someone else), I'd go for: 1) 808 State "90" (ZTT) 2) Various "Artificial Intelligence 2" (Warp) 3) Black Dog "Spanners" (Warp) 4) Aphex Twin "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" (R&S) 5) Autechre "Amber" (Warp) If you asked me the same question this time last week, I could just as well have said: 1) Boards of Canada "Music Has the Right to Children" (Warp) 2) Plaid "Not For Threes" (Warp) 3) Future Sound of London "Accelerator" (Jumpin' & Pumpin') 4) CJ Bolland "Electric Highway" (R&S) 5) Sun Electric "Present" (R&S) /\/)ark http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/
