for starters, i'd recommend: unnatural history II & III - presents a good diverse amount of material... coil vs elph - protection ep - this was one of the few items that i needed for my collection which i very recently picked up, so i'm rather stuck on it =) its *very* good... its odd, but i find that the coil i enjoy most comes under different names (ELpH, Black Light District, Time Machines, etc) any of these releases I cannot recommend enough.. ^brap@sonic.net^ [icq: 12645306] http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ [blackdog][v/vm][jamesbernarddiscography]...etc etc etc sfwd.dyn.ml.org [occasional web.irc.ftp.etc]]] chris g. 1547 boston court #7, santa rosa, ca 95405

well, "the hills are alive" actually appears on unnatural history II. if you're looking for this brand of coil, the closest you're going to get is love's secret domain, or even the snow and window mixes. earlier stuff's a lot harsher, later stuff's more beatless. but all, of course, is deifinitely worthwhile. and then there's the rumored "backwards" album... ;) mj -oh yeah, you might like coil vs elph - protection, too-

My personal all-time favorite thing by them is "The Snow" 12", which includes five remixes, two by Jack Dangers of MBM fame. This came out in 1991. For kitsch value there's their 12" of some ten years ago, a kinf of Laibach-ish take on Soft Cell's "Tainted Love"... "The Snow" is off Love's Secret Domain, a decent album for starters. Sorry it's been a while since I've thought about industrial music =) Peace, Kreig ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: (idm) coil recommendation Author: idm-owner-Kreig.Zimmerman=thehartford.com@hyperreal.org at SMTP Date: 7/8/98 5:52 AM Can anyone recommend a good coil cd to start with? just yesterday i was thinking to myself that coil is an artist that should be more oft discussed on idm. anyways, i'm not that big of a fan of the snow 12". haven't listened to it in a while, but i thought it was pretty dull & uninspired. the coil i would reccommend: unnatural history ii - a good mix of spooky ambience & beat oriented pieces. nothing too challenging but there are some wonderful mood pieces coil presents black light district - basically an entirley ambient work. great sleeping music, it feels like it should be the soundtrack to a hot sleepless night people into industrial muzak always seem to recommend horse rotorvator, but i've never gotten around to listening to it. anyone here have any opinions? oh, and tainted love may be kitsch, but its still cool... ethan ps - i've noticed a lot of folks that say their appreication of idm grew out of industrial music - does anyone feel like the opposite is true (growing into industrial-oriented music from idm)? if so, what were your transitional pieces?

yes, even though it may be closer to what might be considered industrial, this is one of the greats that any self-respecting coil fan would be ashamed not to own. (i think most of the world serpent catalog was recently repressed, so it should be easy to get) anyway, lots of vocals, slithering and tympanic processions. i'm at a loss for track titles, but ostia, the last track, and track 5 (sorry!!!) are pinnacles in their "unnatural" history... and let's not forget the anal staircase... the chatty mj

I'd like to second that....Horse Rotoravator is definately the best Coil album, and if you want a place to start, this would be the best. Its full of everything, from samples to an freaky lyrics. The album is very well crafted too, every time i listen to it, i wonder how they were able to do it. And if you like the psychedelic, full album concept, put this one on and listen to it from beginning to end and you wont be disappointed. Put just one foot on the staircase.....

This title is not on WorldSerpent and is currently not available. Stevo at Some Bizarre is rumoured to have repressed it, but these copies are cursed, so look around for used. Along with the announcement of the Nothing release(Backwards), it was told that Horse... and Scatology would possibly be repressed through Nothing, but there is some manner of legal stuff going on re: samples used and buried. Look to the Unnatural Histories for a good cross-section of COIL. 2 and 3 prolly more friendly to some. Manythanks lt really, you should checkout www.brainwashed.com/coil
