I really enjoyed Vibert's track as well as Mr. Scruff's. My only other knowledge of Vibert are the Plug 1 + 2 EPs which I have. Not at all in the same vein. Has he done other stuff with melodic value like the Funkungfusion track?

Yes, he did. Look out for 'Big Soup' on Mo'Wax. There are also a lot of compilation tracks which you may like. For more info check the Luke Vibert discography at <http://www.brainwashed.com/vibert/>. "Rock Critics" love to 'analize' lyrics. That's why most of them are at a loss when it comes to techno..they don't know what to say when there are no words.

tell me about it. i picked up (but didn't purchase) rolling stone the other day just to browse through it. the review of the ninja tune comp (funkungfusion) made me laugh out loud...the few times they've reviewed ninja tune releases, they spend half of the 100 words talking about coldcut and how they go way back to the 'paid in full' remix. yes, it's a groundbreaking remix. yup, coldcut's influential. and great. they only have one track on funkungfusion. and most people who are going to pick it up already know all that. so the guy spends the rest of the review (rightfully) praising the comp, but then bitches right at the end about how it's not continually mixed. and then gives it three stars. sheesh. no mention of the funki porcini, vibert, or mr scruff tracks, no attempt to give an overall 'feel' of the discs. ah, american press. blah. rob

I haven't heard the Funkungfusion track but "Big Soup" is definitely a melodic album. It's all over the place in a subtle way. There are some minor hints of drum'n'bass that keep creeping in, but it's low key. The major cohesive thread is cheez. It ranges through mu-ziq like cheezy melodies, squeeky sounds, breezy whistle melodies, triangles and cow bells, and silly vocal samples. There's a particularily endearing sample of someone saying "You can now here what it sounds like when one speaks through a ring modulator," and then proceeding to do so. It's an extremely fun album if you like mu-ziq like melodies, lounge musiq and silly samples. Sheila. -- * sheila.santos... .software.developer.. . ..*discreet.logic
