| I think there is a male | misconception out there that if you don't ceaseslessly buy, collect, | proove your knowlege that somehow you don't appreciate or truly | understand music. A rather snobby classical music fan was peeking through my record collection about a decade ago (when it was all Ramones, the Fall, the Residents, and Motorhead) and we were talking rather nicely about music. He mentioned that, having seen my record collection, he could effectively discount my taste in music. I was kinda offended - not because he thought that Chopin was better than Joey Ramone, but because he thought he could pigeonhole me by looking at my records. I told him that it's misguided to judge someone's musical tastes by what they own, or for that matter even by what they listen to most of the time. I play squarepusher sometimes for freinds at the office - they genuinely enjoy it, but they would never choose to listen to it on their own. Is their appreciation of the music inferior to mine? I don't think so. Some of them have even pointed out to me interesting things about the music I hadn't noticed before, and actually increased my appreciation of it. I'm not going to draw male/female comparisons, but I did want to acknowledge that the idea that you can be a IDM "appreciator" without being a slobbering fan is often overlooked. -Cf ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - c h r i s t ø p h e r f ª h e y . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ chris@raremedium.com 2 1 2 - 6 3 4 - 6 9 5 0 x 2 5 8 http://www.raremedium.com - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - .

Don't normally contribute to this sort of thread, but I agree with this point. In one particularly tedious spell of employment five years ago I was playing Wire's 'comeback' EP from 1985 (can't remember the name). A generally tragic bloke commented that it sounded like punk played by musicians - which I found to be a wonderful distillation. The same week I played my copy of The Philosophy of Sound and Machine; that didn't go down very well... adam
